WTB - 3 person hiking tent

Sun 07 Feb, 2016 8:30 pm

Hi all,

I'm after a 3-person hiking tent and thought I would ask the question here..

I do a yearly hike with my daughter and now my 5 year old son wants to join in as I have looked up some new ones and was a bit deterred with the high prices.

If there is anything available, please let me know via PM or email on bradwhite@mail.com and I'll get back to you asap.

Thanks!
Brad

Personally, if you are doing numerous overnight bushwalking trips per year I would just suck it up and buy the best there is out there e.g. Tarptent, Big Agnes etc. since you will spend more in the long run. In my experience, I've bought cheap and heavier tents which in the end added up to the total cost of buying a Tarptent or Big Agnes.

But for one or two trips here is a cheap $49.90 and heavy tent (Oztrail Flinders 3 person dome) coming in at 2.9kg, dimensions 2.05m x 2.05m. It appears to pack down okay.

If you're wanting to balance quality with price, check out what's on offer by Black Wolf and Zempire.

For around $300 you'll find something in the Zempire range (check out the Trilogy). But, as Lorrainey100 says, by the time you burn through a few lesser tents, you may as well just make the jump for something top quality. Tarptents and Big Agnes are very well regarded on this forum - if the budget goes that far.

That said, I don't think you'll burn through a heap of Trilogys. They're fine tents. Nicely spec'd. They feel quality. They look good.

I'm about to take one of their 1P Atoms on the road for a 7 day cycling trip. I intent to absolutely thrash it to see whether it lives up to first impressions. I bet it will.

As others have said in previous threads - your tent is your home when you're on the track (and it's a weight on your back getting to camp) so appreciate its value and don't necessarily go for the cheapest option. In fine whether, a tarp will do or a mozzie dome. But it's when the weather goes bad - wind, rain, humidity, and heat - that you'll appreciate that you're bunkered down in a good tent.

(Disclosure: I work for Snowys - a camping shop that sells two of the brands I mention above.)

Thanks to those who helped me on this one. Found a nice second hand, very lightly used 3 person tent and tried and tested it already!

Perfect tent, lighter and smaller than my old trusty 2 man tent!

Cheers!
