SOLD For Sale: Tarptent Scarp 1 (nr Port Macquarie, NSW)

Hi everybody.

I purchased the Scarp 1 Tarptent in early 2011. It has not been used at all since I bought it as I have had some ongoing medical problems which prevents me from doing overnight hiking and that includes the Tassie and alpine hikes I wanted to do when I purchased the tent.

So the tent is in excellent condition. I put it up when I first got it and left it overnight. I pulled it down and that was it. It has not even been seam sealed as you had to do it yourself back then so I never got to due to me breaking my foot and having ongoing problems with the foot.

Everything is included in the price:
Scarp 1 with extra interior mesh and crossing poles making it suitable for all seasons, 8 inch stakes etc.
Tyvek Groundsheet
Stuffsack
Silicone sealer
Reflective guylines: 2 x 4 ft, 2 x 6 ft, 2 x 2 ft
6 x Aluminium 6 inch stakes.

I haven’t put in too many details about how good I thought the tent was when I bought it as you all know how good Tarptents are.

I can’t find the invoice, I think it was emailed back then (don’t know where it’s gone) but have the packing list. It was shipped from the US. I have the instructions and repair kit as well.

I have been undecided on selling the tent for the last 2 years as I have been hoping to fully recover but two weeks ago I fractured my knee cap which was the final straw.
Both Henry and Franco were extremely helpful with my email queries back then before I purchased the tent.

I will keep my big agnes copper spur2 for camping and day hikes whenever I fully recover and it will be sad to see the Scarp1 go, especially unused but I have to move on.

All up I think it cost about $500 by the time I got the extras and had it shipped.
I would like to sell it for $350 including Australian postage.

I live near Port Macquarie if that is any help and my sister juju (a member) will vouch for me.

Good question and one Ill probably be asking myself for a while but heres my thoughts so far.

SS1 Feels roomier inside perhaps due to its higher roof, it has far wider vestibules and they feel 'safer' to cook in etc due to the steepness of the walls.

Scarp has a smaller footprint. It 'should' be better in snow/wind. However I never had a problem with the SS1 or SS2 for that matter. The SS1 would shed snow ok (even though I never tested this) and it definitely handled wind ok if pitched properly.

However the Scarp is easier to pitch well for wind, so its possibly more user friendly in regards to not having to put too much thought into how you set up guy lines for instance. Where as the SS1 does require you to do a bit extra with guy lines to handle high winds.

One thing I didn't like about the scarp was the inners zip is designed the same on both sides so you need to sleep a certain way around if you want easy access to the vestibule. Where as the SS has the inners zippers offset and reversed on both sides so regardless of how or where its pitched you can choose a side that will give you easy access to the vestibule regardless of what way around you are sleeping. Sounds a bit petty and realistically its no big deal but its still something I noticed having pitched the tent on a slight slope (so obviously had my head up the higher end) and then realising the door on the inner didn't really open in a user friendly way for the way I had to sleep.

I think the scarp was condensating more than the SS would but its really difficult to be certain about this due to all the variables but maybe the higher roof in the SS worked better for this?

The scarps centre pole is a bit of pain to put in and take out but Im sure Ill tolerate that ok. But the SS in a lot of instances required me to have a couple of goes at getting the pegs in the ground in the right place where as the Scarp is easier to get right the first time.

Both have double entry, both can take a second mat if required but the SS does this better.

So at the end of the day Im happy with the Scarp due to its easier 4 season pitching and slightly smaller footprint but obviously it comes with some minor sacrifices over the SS.
