[WANTED] Can you spare some gear for a good cause?

Mon 23 Jan, 2017 1:46 pm

Hi all,

I’m part of a group of students from Charles Sturt University who have just formed a new university Outdoors Club. Through the club, we hope to get more people outside exploring and appreciating the natural world, to better members’ outdoor skills and experience, and to improve student and staff health and wellbeing. We plan to operate with as minimal environmental impact as possible, and to hold participant safety as the highest priority during club events.

We have a varied calendar of events planned for the year, in activities ranging from bushwalking, rock climbing and kayaking to snow camping, canyoning, and mountain biking. We also have an enthusiastic, dedicated committee keen to make the club a success. However, as a new club we are very much limited by the minimal funds and gear that are available to us. This is where I was hoping some of the members of this forum might be able to help out…

Does anyone have any gear that they no longer need/use that they would be willing to donate to our club? Except for a couple of items of climbing gear, we have an otherwise blank inventory so would be extremely grateful for anything anyone was able to offer. Our trips will largely be planned around what gear we have, so any gear received would definitely be well loved, used and appreciated.

I will be in the Blue Mountains and Sydney for the next three weeks starting Saturday 28/1, so can pick up items in person during this time. Alternatively, we can pay for postage on items if you live further away.

We’d also be interested to hear from you if you have gear that’s in disrepair (e.g. a tent with a ripped fly, pack with a broken zipper etc.). We have some repair skills within the group that could see these items back in use again.

Looking forward to hearing from you! :)

Cheers,
FootTrack.

Depending on the age range of your club it might be worth looking at affiliating with Scouts (which is wear my excess gear goes). This would tap you into far more then just gear

All my spare gear is so far to the other side of LightWeight that nobody would want to carry it; otherwise I'd be happy to help out

Hiya,

RE: gear donation - 3 sleeping bags

I have three BlackWolf synthetic sleeping bags. Each weighs 1.4kg and despite Comfort Temperature Ratings of -2C at purchase, my kids and I can assure you they are comfort around 7deg in open conditions, 3-4 deg in a tent. So they are heavy for how warm they are, and summer use only. Tapered rectangular 75cm shoulder, 55 at feet, with hoods, long enough for me at 185 high. They are 4 years old, total 30 nights use each, clean and undamaged.

We have upgraded and I am keen to see them used again and was planning on gifting them. I can post them to you free of charge.

My only question is, will they see much use with you, given the temp rating?

Let me know. This is my first time conversing in this forum so I am unsure if you can respond directly or if it will be thru this conversation. I will look out for replies, but I only check here weekly.

Happy hunting, hope you get other offers.

Thanks rurik, this might be something we could look into. I expect the majority of our members will be in the 18-25 age bracket.

Thanks Moondog, all good. Let me know if you stumble across anything anyway. We definitely won't be picky - anything is better than nothing when you're starting from scratch ;)

p.s. when I get a moment next week, I'll put up a post showing my pulk and harness build :) I've been meaning to do it for a while. It worked really well up at the snow last year!

Thanks a lot Walkingman1, that is very generous of you. I'm sure the club will be stoked with them.

The majority of our trips will be held in mild, three season conditions, so I think bags like these would be perfect. We also ran a survey for prospective members late last year (to see what gear people had, what they wanted to get out of the club etc.), and found that most people had little to no gear and classified themselves as beginners. So I expect they will get a lot of use (they certainly won't be sitting on a shelf somewhere collecting dust!).

I'll send you a personal message on here to discuss things further. You'll have to be logged on to view it, and you'll be able to find it by clicking on the "messages" link at the top left of the page.

Hi all,

I'll also be in the Blue Mountains on February 25 and 26, so if anyone has some gear they would like to donate please get in touch.

On a side note, I also have my black packraft and half-made, coloured packraft with me in Sydney at the moment, so if you want to donate some gear and check those out at the same time, let me know!

Cheers,

FootTrack.

Hi FootTrack,

I have a 50L Caribee overnight backpack which has carried me through uni bushwalking trips and backpacking through Europe and North America as well as a few multi-dayers around Australia. It's still in good nick and the only part that has worn out is elastic on the edge of the lid, something that could be remedied easily by sewing some new elastic on top if it causes issues (it never did for me).

Could your club use this?

Hi Violet Femme,

Thanks a lot for your post and offer :) We would definitely use your pack. It looks like a great little one, and 50 L is a handy size too. No worries about the elastic - we can easily fix that if it causes any issues. I'll send you a PM.

Hi all.

I'll be in Melbourne this weekend if anyone has any gear they'd like to donate to our club. We'd be particularly interested in hearing from you if you have mattresses, tents or hardshell jackets/pants.

As before, I'm happy to pick up items in person.

Cheers,

FootTrack.
