WTB- 1P or 2P Tent
Aiming for 2kg or under
Is for my 21yo son who is doing his first overnighter with me week after next. I am taking my own solo shelter and was going to just let him carry my 3.8kg car camping tent ...but would like him to want to come back out with me overnight again
Doesn't have to be fancy, just needs to be able to stand up to a night at 1500m in a reasonably sheltered spot.
Oh and yes, sharing the larger tent/splitting the weight would be the
logical thing to do, but he is traumatised by that idea. Budget is not fixed, but as I am funding it, as cheap as possible plus post would be great. Already bought him a larger pack etc

Naturehike tents are cheap and light. Dont know about durable, saw a guy selling them on gumtree posted from 130 bucks.. Also check out the lanshan UL tents on aliexpress. Check out snowys.com.au for the compainion pro hiker range/oztrail range.
Cheap, light and durable - pick two.

The latest bunch of oztrail hiker tents are not terrible. Not great, but not completely bad. The companion pro hikers are heavy, but pretty bomber in my experience. Whoever makes them also sells to Aldi, at least the hiker-2.

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.
Thought I would see what people had sitting in their sheds gathering dust first rather than purchasing something new straight up.

I bought 2 at Aldi a few years back. I agree they are bomb proof, my main one has been in some quite heavy storms and never budged or leaked- the other has mainly been used for car camping. Happy to move either one on as I no longer need 2 .
2.5 kgs tho! Happy with $50 plus postage if you want it. Its in the picture on the right at MCallister Springs afew years back...

Cheers for that GregR, looks like a great little tent. I saw on some older threads you had camped in the snow with your tent, awesome. I love me some Aldi bargains!
I may yet take you up on your offer, will just give it a few days and see if I can make it into the 2kg or less range.

He,s 21, doesn,t need a tent, at worst a tent fly

Yeah maybe a tarp, groundsheet and head net will do..? Where are you planning to go? Can even start with a regular silver one
I joined in on an outward bound trip last year, came home and promptly ordered myself a tarp!

So maybe I should have listed 'WTB- bag of concrete for 21yo' ?

Good training!
Have been a couple of Tarptent good buys here recently. Often we never hear from the Market topic poster-er again

Neo, yes you are right- some cracking good tarptent buys.
I would be most keen on a Bowfin I think. Love the palatial look of the stratospire but I am realistic about my pitching skills- bowfin is more 'me' proof.
Oh dear. Don't know if I should have joined this forum after being a longtime lurker, it appears you will all enable me and my desire for a cheapie tent for my son will evolve into me buying something I want and pretending I got it for him

Hi get it! You know that you need a tent upgrade anyway
I'm stoked with my Protrail (not selling!) other preferred shelter is an STS tarp, it's around 440g.
First was an EPE 2p. I'd offer it to you but not on hand and about 2.6kg in the bag. OK for a starter or 2 peeps to share.

PURCHASED
Thank you for the replies. If anyone is interested, my offspring will be sheltering in a 2nd hand Goondie 2 (!
!) instead of being under a tarp. I didn't feed him his concrete as a kid, clearly
The Goondie is roomier and not that much heavier than my solo shelter, so I daresay it can see myself taking it out a bit too, so I am pleased with the purchase.
