If large meant wider mate I would have grabbed it. Don't often see the magic words 'large' for sale.

Large does mean wider as well as longer, the regular is 55cm wide and the large is 64cm

I'm only short at 167cm so maybe more suited to the regular too, although a large suddenly appeals for the sake of indulgence.. What are the drawbacks of going unnecessarily large?

Weight is the main draw back. Not sure if there are any others unless you have a very small tent.

Weight and size when packed. But us large people get by carrying larger mats(and clothes and sleeping bags and in cases entire tents). It would be nice to have only one oversized item to worry about. Go for it if you want it, I say.
