[FS SYDNEY] PADDY PALLIN CLASSIC COTTON JAPARA HIKE TENT

Wed 27 Nov, 2019 5:01 pm

A Blast from the Past - Classic Paddy Pallin Three Man A Tent, green cotton japara.
Very airy, basic tent, very flexible design allows lots of different configurations.
Completely original very good condition, always carefully dried and stored away.
Never had a lot of use as I preferred sleeping under the open sky whenever possible.
Has all the original cotton sash cord ridge rope, cotton tape door ties etc - the whole tent is 100% cotton (the guy ropes are nylon blind cord).
Doors at one or both ends can be rolled up and tied back for airflow, light or to enjoy the view and one or both walls can be pitched up to open the tent up, or it can even be opened right out and used like a fly if you just need shade. You can also use it as an extra blanket over a sleeping bag if its a bit cool.
Never been repaired, waxed or reproofed. No holes or defects.

Very quick and easy to pitch and strike, comes with a set of poles and pegs etc, ready to set up.
Footprint is 2100 X 2100 , very roomy for one + gear, or room enough for two with a bit of room for gear around the edges.
Put your groundsheet down first, then your sleeping bag etc.
Height is 1100mm. Weight is 1.7Kg (tent only) or 3Kg with poles and pegs etc.

I can post the whole kit anywhere in Australia by Aussie Post at buyers cost, or pick up from Berowra Heights 2082.
$100 or best offer.... Phone 0412472901

A blast from the past? You are not wrong Steve. I had a very similar japara tent circa 1960s, a "Tassie" wall tent, served its purpose very well back in the day, if I recall correctly I also had a wool-filled sleeping bag that weighed as much as the tent. As my current tent comes in just on 1.4 kg I think I will pass on this one, interesting to see that you have looked after this one so well though.

Thanks - it's just luck as I've been through a few others since those days.

I took it around Australia with me but only used it for one night on the whole trip. After camping out in it during late snow at Mount Barrington in the early 80's, my wife's minimum spec was for new fangled sealed floor and zip up mesh so it was just put away and only used very occasionally if I was taking the kids for an overnight hike near home in mild weather.

It has a great feel, more like a tarp than a modern tent, and folks "of a certain age" who recognise it are amazed see it set up.

Unfortunately I lost my other favorite Paddy Pallin kit a few years ago, my blue zip-top water bag - here last spotted in Picaninny Gorge WA about 2010 - I wish they were still available...not quite as watertight as the old oilskin type was but still the best design for a lightweight water bag I reckon.
