WTB- (QLD) Various DIY supplies

Postby Bluegum Mic » Sun 03 Feb, 2013 12:12 pm

I just thought id post this in case someone has purchased some diy supplies and never got around to their project. Im after
6 yards of no-see um
8 yards of silnylon (30D pref)
3 yards of a lighter weight fabric ie pertex or a 1.1oz style nylon.
Im after complete pieces (not off cuts). I will likely put an order in o/s for these soon but just thought id post here first in case.

Cheers

Not necessarily. I've bought a bug mesh from a local store when we were in Sydney and it was fine. Weight might be an issue though as I know the stuff my local spotlight sell up here is really heavy. I might go back and check our store though as its been a couple of months since I've been there. Cheers for the heads up.

I can send you some lightweight but strong polyester binding tape if you need any, but all of my fabric is much heavier than you want or need, closer to 2 ounce

Well the stuff I have is probably labelled 'tulle'. Haven't tried it out yet, so not sure how well it works.

Very light tho.

~8gsm vs ~28gsm for no see um.

Hi Mic, I'm seriously contemplating making an inner my new tent and I'm wondering where you plan on getting your supplies?

I have a duomid on the way and would like a solo inner for it. It looks like a slow, painful and expensive experience to go with my original plan of an Oookworks inner so making my own is looking good - probably be a slower, more painful and more expensive experience in the end though

Gday Tom

I usually get my stuff through either DIY gearsupply or bearpawwd. Mind you the pertex Im eyeing off is from zpacks. I don't tend to use thru-hiker as their postage is always crazy (although I have ordered insulation from them before).
Let me know if you want anything. Im still in two minds as to whether to have the inner made or make it myself. Ive got plenty of time up my sleeve so I should do it myself.

Thanks Mic, that DIY gear supply looks like it has everything in one place, should make ordering a bit easier and help with the shipping costs.

edit: I even see theat they have DIY guides with headings like 'sewing skills' etc, just the ticket!

With all those nice materials and accessories I have a vision of a sleek and sexy work of art but the little sceptic inside me is saying "no, it will probably be ugly as hell and you will stitch yourself to the work desk"

I believe the silnylon thru-hiker sells ('shield' silnylon) is more durable and water resistant than other brands, as it has multiple layers/sprays of silicon on it. Its also a bit heavier to go with the extra silicon ...

Thanks for the heads up Maelgwn, all the bits of pieces of information I can get about the different materials I'll keep note of and then weigh up the pros and cons of each before I put any orders in. It looks like the stuff you mention is pretty lightweight though, too light for a floor and its coated so no good for the walls, I'll be aiming for a quite heavy coated material for the floor and then a lightweight breathable fabric for the walls.

Now that I've started looking I realise that there is a LOT of choice... silnylon's,M50, M90, pertex quantum, microlight etc

edit: I see that some materials have a DWR but are breathable and I thought the opposite, it seemed intuitive...

So far I see that YKK zips are the go and so is Gutermann thread - and some cheap plastic painters drop sheets for a lot of practice runs

Yes agree with Maelgwn there's definitely different qualities of sil and some are better than others (I've also read that the shield sil from thru-hiker is good). I've had the stuff from bearpawwd before and its good qualitity impregnated stuff (some have only got the silicone on one side). Quest outfitters is another one to check. You may find a PU coated fabric on there which may suite your needs (more likely to be robust/heavier weight vs silnylon is really good when trying to cut weight...though keep in mind a little more slippery too as a floor). I may have some small pieces of 70D sil left here Tom if you want me to post you a square to see if its what your after.

It's pretty much all another language to me at this stage eg PU coated fabrics vs silnylon (not to mention dyneema and all the other ones I've already mentioned...). I'm gonna have to do some more research as soon as I get some time, won't be this or next week though as I'm going on a trip down to Yuraygir :)

That'd be great though Mic, I'll pm you my details

No worries mate. I've actually got some PU (poly urethane) coated ripstop nylon as well so I'll post you a swatch of each. Enjoy your trip. That sounds magic. My trip in the lamington has been cancelled this weekend due to closures after the bad weather. Most of it should reopen soon though I believe there was a landslide on the shipstern so that may be out for a while (in case anyone was planning a walk there soon :-)

Waterproof and breathable are the two that intuitively do not go together (although there are many exceptions).

DWR is a treatment to help a fabric repel water, instead of soaking it up. It can be applied to both waterproof and non waterproof fabric.

e.g. Both coated and uncoated Nylon are treated with DWR. In most cases water would not pass through the coated version but can pass through the uncoated version. The coated one is not breathable and the uncoated one is breathable.

I think I have some silnylon that I got from thru-hiker a while back that I never ended up using. I haven't seen it since I moved house last year though. Will let you know.

Sorry I haven't responded in here. Been a tad crazy of late and forgot. Things have become a little full on so Im going to put this project on the back burner for six months. It will also be easier for me to do when we move back to Sydney and I have my lovely sewing room back :-). Tom I haven't forgot you and Im off to the post on Monday. Fingers crossed Cams can find the sil for you :-)

I found my fabric. I got it from Quest Outfitters. I have 3 yards of Gray Ultrasil and 5 yards of Blaze Orange Silnylon 2nds. I also have a bit of (uncoated) ripstop nylon that I bought from Spotlight. Not exactly sure how much. Let me know if you'd like any of it as I won't be using it any time soon. Need a sewing machine.

I feel like phan_Tom has first dibs on it if he wants it? I'd be after $40pp for all of the silnylon. Paid $65 and it is still folded up in the package I got it in. If he doesn't want it, you're welcome to it. I had to look up SWMBO in the urban dictionary to figure that out. hehe

Cams I just spent my money on a stack of carbon fiber and epoxy; if you still want to move it on in a month I would be willing and hopefully cashed up again.
