Garmin 12 GPS found on the brumby highway in the gully leading from Cowombat Fire Trail to the saddle between Cobberas 2 and Moscow Peak.

You may be able to track this via the serial number. If there's a serial number, contact Garmin and ask if they can say where it was sold. If it went to, say, Paddy Pallin or Bogong, there may be a way of finding the buyer if a credit or debit card was used. If it was bought online then a card of some sort is nearly certain.
