Hi All,

I'm off to live in Canada for a while and the list of gear I need (read: want) to enjoy the mountains is blowing my budget. Hopefully some members can help me out and sell me some of their unneeded stuff.

I'm chasing:
Soft shell pants, waist 33/34, long legs. Heavier weight are better I guess, I've got some light ones that don't do much against snow or water.
Hard shell/rain pants.
Glacier glasses.
Goggles for when I inevitably drop my glasses in a crevasse.
Gloves for camp use and ice climbing (more than one pair is needed). I've got small hands, small or medium gloves would work.
Base layer jacket, with a hood. Something like a light fleece, size medium.
Light synthetic jacket, like a nano puff.
Buff.

These items are a bit of a long shot, I'll probably have to buy them new but who knows:
Insulated light air mattress, long, like a Synmat UL 7
Maaayybe a light alpine tent (No, I don't want a Jannu )

Also, in lieu of the jannu, I've got a pacer 1 that's semi for sale, $150 + postage from Melbourne.

I can highly recommend the top of the range INOC aldi jacket and pants.

They even come with a removable primaloft jacket.

I'd expect quality above that of Kathmandu and they only cost 100$

You will have plenty of time to shop until the Northern winter, think "Goodwill"
Camp gloves cold weather leather work gloves with a woollen liner
Drop over the border and buy surplus US Army gear
Learn to layer up, equally on all parts of the body so think trackydacks with winter weight long johns and a windshell From what I saw Canada is much dearer than the US but lots cheaper than here
Use multiple mattresses starting with cheap stuff then a Ridgerest, there is a reason that these are still bought and used they have a very low failure rate.
Aldi don't sell online? Any $2- shop should have fleece tops/hats/gloves etc
# 3 hats plus a neck roll or a decent balaclava plus an oversized beanie

I picked up a lot of good base layer fleece, thermals and a decent windstopper fleece jacket and vest from Vinnies a few days ago, they are just stocking their winter clothing now and seem to have the entire summer backload of cold waether stuff going on the racks. Matter of fact I might go have another look today. (I paid $24 for 7 items...)

Good suggestions, I'll have to visit all the op shops. I've already got thermals, mid-weight fleeces etc. No stranger to the cold but I've grown out of all my softshell pants.

dinna89 cheers for the offer but I need a 2person tent. Been looking the Marmot hammer, or something similar.

Moondog I'm a medium in most things, but I've got long legs and arms. Small to medium in gloves. Large in jackets sees me ok, I can layer most things.

Best softshells I have ever used are Puma track pants treated with Nikwax

Second the Ridgerest. They cost two bob overseas, do the job, and don't break.

Definitely getting a ridge rest, they're the bees knees.

Unfortunately there wasn't too much at the op shop, I managed to pick up a pair of fleece gloves for nothing though.

have you checked what you will be able to buy the gear for in canada? should be cheaper there.
once you're over there you'll be able to pick up no end of deals for negligible postage through online deals

I haven't had a look at gearbuyer before, so thanks for the link. I've been told you have to pay duty on item costs bringing stuff into Canada through America, I haven't really been considering doing that.

No duty on personal items like clothing if it's yours and already worn ; I believe that the unopened new stuff does attract the hefty Canadian duty tho, so make sure everything you may be concerned about is out of its packaging with tags removed and you should be OK
