Help buying a new sleeping bag online

Postby jackson_turner1 » Tue 22 Jul, 2014 6:18 pm

what i was wondering is, if anyone has a great site that has a great deal for sleeping bags? preferable that ships directly to aus.

After a long time searching for a cheap bag i havnt had much luck.
The best i can get so far is 20% off rrp of STS and OP bags in store, (the sore doesnt stock any bushlites which is what i would prefer.)
a secondhand kathmandu moonraker for $300.
and a macpac lattitude 500 for $325

SO from what ive heard on here you can get bang for your buck online.

what i was wondering is, if anyone has a great site that has a great deal for sleeping bags? preferable that ships directly to aus.

the bag would prefeabley be a durable bag and not ultralight. brands preferably OP, STS Mont.
Cheers,

All the brands you mention are more or less australian or NZ brands and therefore I would doubt you will get them cheaper from overseas. Other brands maybe.
Try Campsaver for other brands or, try this website www.google.com :)
I would get a OP bag as they are still made in OZ

Im asking people on here because
i dont want to filter through the many many sites that arnt worth looking though
i want a good trusted site

other brands are fine like WM and others as long as they are still high quality and cheaper than you can buy in store or on Paddy Pallin or what have you.

I thought Paddy's WM prices had been pretty reasonable in recent years. You also get after sales service.

Am I out of date ???

No your not stry...........

Paddy's Western Mountaineering Puma GWS price,

$999.99 + after sales service.

Rec retail U.S for the Puma GWS

$940.00

Don't forget as well that if the bag and the freight go over $1000 dollars there is a 5% tariff from Customs.

Price differences in general have become much less between Australian and overseas in the last year or two (exceptions exist). A few years ago, if you didn't get away with at least 50% net saving on outdoor gear, you weren't trying. Now, it is often 10-20% max - often enough for me to consider the local option for the after sales back up.

Though still more bargins during sales overseas if one can be patient - due to much bigger markets i suspect.

Campsaver, Amazon, REI, Sunnysports and a few others Ive had no problems with at all. Most will require that you use a postal agent though as wont ship specific brands to Aus.

The gap between some gear seems to be getting smaller but the sale prices OS can be hard to beat, even when you factor in freight. Would much rather support local though cant fork out 50-75% more for stuff.

For Aus on line try Kellys base camp. They stock lots of brands including One Planet (have bush lites on web page) STS and many others. Some bags appear to be on sale at the moment but no comment on price by me.

Just a suggestion

I got my WM Alpinlite for $550 with my Oxfam TrailWalkers discount at PaddyP. Their RRP is $540 US though.

Bargains to be found everywhere, look for online staff/discount codes etc.

If you want to buy from the US, most stores don't ship the big brands (90% of brands). Use a post forwarding service, costs around $50 extra, but still worth it considering the price differences between here and US.
