I'm looking for a rain jacket for me Im 188cm 86 kg - probably large.

I am looking at new options including the Marmot precip or patagonia torrentshell

these models suit me for weight, performance and cost but any alternative brand of model basically in the value zone.

I am a two night hiker, inexperienced and for sub alpine Victorian conditions - not looking to challenge K2.

those are good jackets for the price, you could easily pay more for similar jackets. marmot precip is pretty breathable and should have vents as well.

Pretty much a budget price
I want less than that for my S/H jacket of course but you'd need to get a rain hat/Sou'wester to go with it and the red one is pretty enough to wear around town too

Mainpeak are doing the Montane Atomic on clearance in a couple of colours for $139 too

Make sure you get a nice loose fit. I typically size up with rain jackets and that helps the air flow a lot.

Have a look at the Montbell Thunderpass rain jacket. Three layered, taped seams with pit zips. Much sturdier than the laminated jackets in that price range and reasonably long cut.
