Hey my name is Chris,

My wife and I are putting together our first sets of ultralight gear. We have nothing except some trekking poles and thermarest mats.

I've thought about the larger/more expensive equipment, to get an idea of what I want see viewtopic.php?f=58&t=23293 and https://www.geargrams.com/list?id=32789.
Key things:
- Backpacks
- tarp, pegs, groundcloth , quilts,
- cooking pots, stove, fuel bottle, shield
- clothing, rain clothing
- knife, lighter, headlamps, compass
Any other gear you think might be useful.

I'll consider anything.
I would really like to try some backpacks on if you're in Newcastle or surrounds.

Going to be doing multi-day walks in NSW Great North Walk in early October for starts, would like colder walks as well.

I'm 178cm usually a medium, wife is 170cm small, both slim.
Both torso 18-20'

Chris

What temperature and conditions Chris?
Also what is your normal clothing size?
I can't help as I'm an XL to XXL but my XL Mont-Bell Thermawrap is going to be listed as soon as I get home in 3 days time and that fits more like a standard large

Good luck on your quest!

I probably can't help you with specific gear (I tend to lend my old stuff out or give it away!), what I would suggest is not to feel pressured into buying 'all the things' at once. See if you can hire a couple of the 'big ticket' items before lashing out too much. If you're in Melbs try Bogong equipment, or I think 50 Days do equipment hire too. Or if there's a bushwalking club or association about, they'll often hire out stuff too (for example, over in the West the Bibbulmun track foundation hires out gear). Particularly with packs, it would suck to buy a back too large or too small, without knowing what volume your pack will eventually end up with! Although hired gear is not always fancy, it'll give you an idea of what you like and what you don't, e.g. is that rated sleeping bag still too cold for your partner, or that tent too short for you?

Maybe consider some tyvek for a ground sheet for starters, there's a thread in this part of the forum.

I have a Gossamer Gear Mariposa pack, medium size that has been used by my husband only once on an overnighter. For some obscure reason he prefers his big Osprey pack with its excess of straps!
My Mariposa is my 'go to' pack.
Intersted at all?
I can post more details/link/pics/think of a price etc

Edit Sat 9.7.16 See separate post for this item for sale

Hi Kearnzo. I see you're after the Fizan compact poles. I don't have any to offer for sale, but I noticed them on Massdrop recently. Might be worth checking them out?
