Looking for old cheap(maybe damaged) down gear to relife

I am looking for old gear that I can salvage and relife to make some lightweight gear for my kids, particularly my daughter, who has expressed a keen interest to upgrade from daywalks to overnight and potentially a NZ trip in about 18 months, but also my two older boys. If you have a damaged sleeping bag or down jacket or similiar that you would like to see repurposed rather than chucked let me know :) Anything else that may suit children getting in to hiking potentially of interest

Not quite what you're asking for... but have you checked out the Aldi snow gear? (if there is any left) The kids' gear is hugely popular and the prices are pretty good.

Depending on your kids' ages, the small adult sizes may well fit them. Aldi sizes tend to be on the smaller side.

We have their ski gear already, more looking for things I can repurpose to make UL gear for them, a sleeping bag light enough for them to carry themselves, etc :) We have a rulle that if you can walk it you can carry (most of if not all) your gear. On day walks she is expected to carry a raincoat, her lunch and water as a minimum and the older kids also carry a small first aid kit, etc. I am going to book for us to do the Able Tasman in NZ in 18 months so she needs to get used to carrying some of her own sleeping gear also so that I don't have to carry both our gear ;)

No wuz was thinking of mainly merino & baselayer stuff. I'm really happy with what I've purchased so far.

Oh yep, I have seen that. We are skiers also so have some of that sort of stuff already and top it up every year or two as they grow out of it. :)

How old and big are your kids? We have 4 kids, whohave been outdoors since they were small, so, as they are all now 16 plus, we may have some spare stuff.

PS - if you can't sew, now is the time to learn, and buy a machine. So much easier to MYO.

I had a kids external frame rucksack and some kids trail shoes listed on the market place somewhere if you look back through the posts. You could consider a costco down blanket and convert to a quilt for a cheap option for sleeping.

I am a great sewer(have an entire sewing room actually!), hence my hunt for old gear I can repurpose :D

My kids are nearly 8, 11 and 13(youngest girl, two older boys but none are colour snobs)

Thanks :) I did see those but I have a heap of thermals of my own which are pretty small on me which the kids can use so I felt they were probably better off for someone else who might have more need of them. I also have loads of micro and polarfleece in the sewing room so it is really more outerwear and sleeping gear I am looking to fabricate now

It is always worth keeping an eye on Gumtree for second hand camping gear. Every now and then a really nice bit of bushwalking gear appears at a good price.
