The duct tape in photo is to cover up the activation button port (you don't want to set it off accidently!). I liked being able to send a text message from anywhere to say 'All OK' (or whatever) and the real time tracking is good (loved ones can check where you are), but I just don't want to pay the US$ yearly subscription fee. Just to confirm: this is just a paper-weight unless you register it and pay the yearly subscription fee. However, once paid up you have a high tech PLB/Tracker/Messenger all in one. Device works in conjunction with a smartphone app. and works effectively anywhere on earth (well...not in cave, deep canyon, underwater etc, etc!).
