I walked the Milford and Roteburn tracks last February and loved them and would like to go back to NZ late December January. I see many of the great walks are booked and I have read many comments about how busy they are during this period. So rather than doing one of the more popular great walks and since If I have a couple of weeks where would you suggest I walk? I'm happy to carry a tent and a pretty experienced hiker. I don't mind whether I go to the South or North Island and I will have a hire car. I'd like to go where there will be a few people around as I'm likely to be hiking on my own.

this book details some classic trips in it that arent often documented very much

this one covers more tramps, more of a slant to the more popular ones looking all over nz

lonely planet did an excellent tramping in nz, out of print, might be available on amazon, or you could try and find the pdf version online, the only version i've found was a torrent and has a corrupt fiordland section...

Wayno - thanks for the excellent suggestions - I've tracked down a copy of Tramping NZ - the latest edition - it's an excellent guide - now I just need to chose and plan - I reckon I will come in late Jan when the crowds are less
