Posted: Thu 18 Jun, 2015 4:30 pmWhy did the trampers leave the climb so late in the day? Were they planning an overnight climb? People really need to be considerate with their trip plans with the potential impact on SAR personnels and not unnecessarily put others in danger.

its a big problem in america, people worried about paying for the rescue or being fined, end result people delay alerting the authorities for help and it makes the search and rescue bigger, more difficult and dangerous for the rescuers as a result.. no one wins.
they will only consider prosecuting people who request a rescue when none is needed at all. but even then no one has been prosecuted for that in NZ. that may change because the frequency of completely needless calls for rescue are on the rise.
i won't elaborate but there are some pretty stupid cases. thats getting off topic.
the ice axe pictured in the article was bent trying to dig a trench in iron hard ice...

Posted: Fri 19 Jun, 2015 8:01 amUnfortunately the party of eight were not experienced, unprepared for the elements, and were using gear that was not suitable for the conditions.
Plus they started a climb at 4pm in winter.
Maybe there should be an IQ test administered before people are allowed to go walking . . .
