Arthurs, Franklins, Weld R and Central Plateau Photos

Postby DaveNoble » Mon 20 Apr, 2009 5:27 pm

I've been recently scanning some old slides and putting selection on the web. Some are -

Weld River - 1981 trip -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/WeldRiver/Weld.html

Western and Eastern Arthurs - Jan 1999
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Art ... urs99.html

Central Plateau Walk - April 2000 -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Eas ... aWalk.html

Lake St Clair Circumnavigation ( via Mt Olympus, Du Cane and Traveller Ranges) - Jan 2001 -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Lak ... rWalk.html

Mt Hopetoun Traverse, E and W Arthurs - Jan 2001 -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Hop ... etoun.html

Central Plateau Walk - April 2001 -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Eas ... uMenu.html

Wilmot - Frankland Range Traverse - Jan 2002 -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Fra ... Range.html

Central Plateau Walk - Jan 2002 -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Cen ... u2002.html

Living in humid Sydney - these slides soon get mouldy - so its good to scan them. Now back to the computer to scan some other trips..... (but I'd rather be walking....)

Beautiful photos, thanks very much for sharing Dave.
Not sure whether it makes sitting at my desk easier or harder? I think the latter
Cheers.

Dave,

The photos are excellent. My personal favourites are from that early Western Arthurs trip. I must look out my old ones from '78.

Great shots. Particularly the reflection shot at Lake Windermere and the sunrise shot from Ossa. Bring on the NZ shots.

That was an amazing night. It seemed quite calm when we climbed Ossa - and I had a small radio and listened to the weather forecast that morning - it was OK. But it is always a bit of a chance camping so high and exposed. When we got on top - it started raining - and it rained till after dark. I woke up around 1am and stuck my head out the tent - and looked south - there was an amazing aurora. I woke martin up - he didn't mind when he saw it. Shafts of light slowly pulsating up from the horizon and fading. Later (3am) - it looked quite different. In the morning - a nice sunrise! We spent quite a few hours on top - it was so nice. Warm and sunny. Then all the daywalkers starting coming up - they had a good view - but didn't know what they had missed.

just out of curiousity- what sort of cameras/film are you using? Some of those look like medium format to me.

Up till 2000 I was using Kodachrome film in Pentax cameras for all except my first trip in 1975 (which was home processed Ektachrome). So the Jan 1999 trips were the last long trips in Tassie using Kodachrome (Kodachrome 64). After that I mainly used Velvia up until about 2005 - for an Easter walk - I carried a 35mm SLR with velvia and also a small digital camera (pentax optio). Since then I have been using just digital cameras. This page -

http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Eas ... aWalk.html

Has a note part way down about equipment and film.

Digital's great, but oh man that Velvia has a look to it. Very distinctive. Thanks for the info!

More fantastic photos Dave, thanks again for sharing.
Helps keep a little sanity whilst sitting here at my desk.
Love those silhouetted Arthurs photos, shows the complexity of the range beautifully.

Cheers.

Crikey Dave, they're some photos!
Is it really this steep?

And this one looks surprisingly similar to one I took a while back...
So I must say, great photo! :)

Dave,

Those shots from the early '80's are like a time capsule. All that gear is so familiar. Paddymade japara tents complete with storm guys. Stubbies and army shirts. Ah the good old days......
