Mt Roland Range Traverse

Mon 30 Jul, 2012 7:49 pm

For the benefit of Miyata610  and others who might be interested in this trip here's some pics and a brief rundown of a great little winter walk.

I headed up the Mt Roland Face Track leaving the King''s Road carpark at about 3pm. It's steep but a good track with some cool boulders from about half way up. It was unseasonably hot and hard work with an overnight pack. The views of the lush farmland and Bass Straight open up and are quite stunning.

Once on top the weather changed pretty quick but allowed a very colourful display from the Mt Roland summit. The area around the summit is fantastic, with jagged crags and mixed alpine heath.

With light fading I headed to a known campsite not far from Minnow Creek, setting up just as darkness fell.

The next morning provided more colour before showers and cloudy conditions set in.

Mt Van Dyke summit provided limited views and snow showers :? I imagine it would be very enjoyable open walking with some cool conglomerate outcrops.
From Van Dyke the descent to the saddle between it and Claude was more considerable than I thought, around 500m I think, but as I emerged from the forest to the Claude plateau I was greeted with 3 Wedgies and sunshine :)

Claude provides well documented challenges, see this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2022 but the views were limited to the immediate area, it was satisfying to look back along the range to Roland.

I then dashed down the road from the fire tower to meet my generous taxi driver at 12 on the nose who ferried me back to my car and made my shift at work in Hobart at 4pm.
Quite a 24 hrs! A beautiful little range desrving of more time.
