Best walking conditions ever!!

Thu 14 Jan, 2010 10:41 pm

I feel soooo incredibly lucky! I hadn't been on an overnight walk for ten years and I went last Friday to Pine Valley and the Labyrinth. I took the easy option and camped at Pine Valley and did day walks from there. After lots of rain all year everything was just so green, the Fagus was verdent!! And I had the perfect weather to enjoy it. Only down side was that I managed to delete 60 photos - including the incredible blue sky shots I had from the top of the Acropolis and the beautiful fields of Pineapple Grass in flower on the slopes of the Acropolis. Damn! :(

I am not sure but I think it was Lake Ophion - feel free to correct me!

On my first day walk up to the Pool of Memories the wind was up, but the next day it was so calm so after a trip up the Acropolis in the morning I went back up and had tea at the Pool of Memories. Happy I did!

I was motoring back to camp from tea at the POM and glanced up and went wow! What a shot!

I was so entranced by Mt Geryon that I really wanted to climb it. I couldn't find the track via Lake Helios but I knew (courtesy of m'dear ol mum) that there was a track behind the POM. I gotta say that it is a rather dangerous track on the scree section. A small boulder just launched itself down the slope about 10metres across from where I was, just as I passed. The whole slope was unstable, I skirted the edge and used the Fagus like ropes on the way down. Anyone else walked up there? I was close to the top and gave up as I was by myself and and being a mum with young kids, my level of acceptable risk has changed somewhat. I'll be choosing a safer route when I climb it next. Sorry about the photo being on its side - not sure what to do about that.

cheers

Ditto! At least you didn't do what I did on my last trip and leave the camera home all together.

Excellent images. Thanks for posting.

Regarding your deleted images, those can most likely be recovered. When you delete photos from a memory card, the images are not actually removed. It is the piece of info that points to the image that is removed, the image itself remains. The image only becomes unrecoverable once you take more photos over the top of them them. So, grab yourself some image or data recovery software, (should be available for free) and attempt to get your images back.
Good luck.

Really pretty thanks for posting!!
As a young father myself, I understand what you mean about your level of risk changing. Since having my son I now know what it's like to fear. It is both a wonderful and terrible thing.

Looking forward to getting up here myself!!

Thanks Bushrunner, for the tip. I was hoping that was the case and have not saved any more images onto the stick. I think I might take it to someone who knows what they are doing as I am worried about accidentally overwriting it. I would be absolutely stoked to get those photo's back, the pineapple grass in flower on the Acropolis was just amazing and all so healthy and green.

Thanks all, for your positive comments! :D

Lovely stuff, thanks for sharing. You've got me thinking about doing this stuff when I next get to Tassie.
Cheers, Ian

Thanks Ian, it's such a beautiful area, I can't wait to get back . . . after I have walked/climbed the rest of Tassie!! Soooo many fantastic places to choose from. I had another walk with sensational weather to Mt Aldabaran and surrounding peaks and lakes. It is just so amazing in there. From Aldabaran we could see Lake Pedder on one side and Precipitous Bluff and the sea on the other. Great shot of Federation too! I kept looking at all the other peaks and lakes that I was itching to visit . . . there are just so many beautiful places to go in Tassie. Lucky I plan to still be walking when I am old and crusty! :-)
