I was just there for a long week end, and I wasn't expecting to see such a beautiful and wild landscape 50 km from Auckland. Gorgeous rock formations, beaches, wild ocean, huge cliffs, and pristine forest. I did some sections of the Hillary Trail, and it sure must be worthwhile to do the whole 70 km.

long sections of the hillary trail can be a mudbath outside of summer. the clay soil also gets greasy in the wet, they are slowly improving the track a bit in sections
http://regionalparks.aucklandcouncil.go ... lary-trailthe waitakeres are a relativeley small park, but covered with 250k's of tracks. most of the forest is regrowth. massive problems with the kauri trees dying off in ever larger numbers from Kauri dieback disease.

Well it was pretty quiet whilst I was there. I guess a sunny early spring week end was a good timing. And as usual, a lot less people doing the walks than admiring the beaches.
