Overland Track in April

I recently walked the Overland Track, with side trips to Pine Valley (Acropolis and Labyrinth) - during April - hoping to catch some good fungi and fagus. I met a lot of very nice people along the way (Including Eggs and his wife at Pine Valley) - and had some great views as always. The track was in very good condition with recent track work between Frog Flats and Pelion. The fungi was very good from Pine Forest Moor onwards - and particularly around Du Cane Hut, Upper Pine Valley and near Echo Point. The fagus was quite poor for that time of the year. Not much had changed (and any that was changing appears in my photos).
A large selection of photos are now online. You can see them using this menu -
http://www.david-noble.net/Tasmania/Res ... kMenu.htmlMy attempts at fungi identification are quite amateurish - and I would strongly recommend the new guide (A Field Guide To Fungi of Tasmania, by Gates and Ratkowsky) to other enthusiasts. I would welcome any corrections or additions to my identifications.
And for those who want to see just a few pictures. Here are some -

Oh! Oh! and Oh!
Who would have believed that fungi could be so beautiful? The colours..... the shapes..... Oh! (again).
Thanks Dave.

It was a nice surprise and a real pleasure to meet a guy whose photos and reports I had been studying for years.
We were around Pine Valley for 5 days but pulled out for a crack at some Freycinet weather before flying home.
I see that the weather forecast was right - fresh snow after we left. We had climbed the Acropolis in snow a few days earlier.
Given the photos you have put up and the discussions had, I should pencil in some more time to revisit this special spot in the park.
My wife greatly enjoyed your web report.

Thanks Mutley and others for your comments.
My philosophy was - "if it fine weather - then head up high and camp in the hills, if the weather is bad - then stay low and enjoy the forests and creeks". The weather was quite mixed, so when it was not the best - then I could stay in the sheltered forests and photograph the fungi. And there was a lot of nice fungi out. All the fungi lighting was natural - no flash or torch used. I did have a sheet of newspaper with me to use as a reflector, but I don't think I ever bothered to use it, or if I did only once or twice. A lot of the time when I was photographing the fungi it was raining on and off, this provided nice soft lighting. Good for forests, creeks, fungi etc.

Great shots all! I've never seem the lime-green fungus...
Funnily enough, I took a shot of that one too, even with the myrtle leaf

Very nice Dave, I doubt there are many these days spending such a length of time on the track. Amazing what else can be seen by slowing down

I really enjoyed the photos and the report on your blog. I think my favourite is OT 9 which looks to be of Pelion Plains?

Dave, forwarded your blog's link to a nature lover friend in the US and she was mightily impressed by the beauty of OLT and the images you captured. She wondered how much load you carried to sustain for 14 days along with all the camera gear. A legend!
