Car shuttle or car shuffle?

Postby Al and Bruce Paton » Wed 19 Oct, 2011 4:18 pm

Probably a strange question, but which is the right phrase - or the one people use most?
I always thought the term was "car shuttle" because you shuttle back and forth - like a shuttle bus. But there are quite a few reference in here to "car shuffles" to get to the start or end of a one-way walk.
Just curious ...

The correct word is the noun "shuttle" a form of transport that travels between two places, "shuffle"a verb is what you do with cards or move restlessly without lifting your feet or even a dance (which many of us males do) :)

I thought I agreed with Corvus, but now I think that shuttle usually applies to regular transport between two places. I just had a look at the current actvities program for a bushwalking organisation that I belong to. "Shuffle" is used there. I could only find one walk where it was relevant but my past observation is that shuffle is usually the term applied by most bushwalking clubs (in NSW at least). Although I have seen both used.

So I looked up the definition of shuffle. Appears it can be a verb or a noun. I found (among other uses/examples) the following:

Verb - move (people or things ) around so as to occupy different positions or to be in a different order

Noun - a change of order or relative positions

I'm now favouring shuffle, unless you have to do it multiple times at regular intervals .

To me I've always thought a shuttle is something regular/pre defined timetable etc where as a car shuffle is what you do with fellow walkers to arrange transport ie both cars drive to the end of the walk, park one then drive the other one back to the start of the walk. When finished drive the car at the end back to the one at the start.

No accounting for incorrect use of language despite a very clear explanation of "shuffle" in the dictionaries , the guide books are always correct :? :)

Yeah, I agree with that definition Mic, looks like the ayes have it!

And you'll be pleased to know corvus that I believe, as well as the general butchering of the english language by the 'SMS generation', that some of the youth of today aren't even saying "whatever" anymore, its simply "whatev"
