notes of a journey (Tasmania)- 1867

I was sent this today by a mate and thought may interest others.

Its about an early surveyor (J E Calder) who was sent to examine the hinterland areas of Tasmania and his narrative of that trip and some interesting people he encountered along the way as well as his dislike of some of our rugged terrain.

'she road in front of us almost the whole distance, smoking a dirty little black pipe..'
'.. this abominable ravine' (The Forth, then he equally describes the Mersey)
and mention of an early bushranger 'Britain' and a poem inscribed on a tree in 1827 that he visited.

Glad they were of interest pazzar, a fellow surveyor sent it to me after I'd sent an interesting old 'land use plan' of northwest Tasmania of the 1860's today.
He is deep into surveying history of Tasmania and has a stack of info.

I have some old parliamentary track reports I am wanting to post but am waiting to see if i can get some scanned copies rather than scan my rather dark paper copies.

Nice one taswegian, I have often thought(and suggested) this forum would do well to have a section for posting such documents/photographs. Having just finished a long term project for work in Melaleuca I have immersed myself in the history of that area, it is great to be able to join-the-dots-so-to-speak.
