219 On Johns on Johns Rd is a great stay for about $75 a night.

Last trip I stayed at a few backpackers, and found this one quite interesting www.jail.co.nz/
It's an old jail converted to a backpackers. 30/bed or 79/room
Best part is 24 hr check in and buses can pick you up on the way to wanaka
