Cedar Creek

Postby Chris_Stevenson » Thu 30 Sep, 2010 9:05 am

Can someone please tell me the approximate grid reference (Jamison 1:25000) of the camping cave on Cedar Creek that would be used when crossing from Walls Pass to Ruined Castle?

As I am not familiar with this area, I thought I might suggest to any replies that they consider replying by PM if the area is in line with the rule for this forum area -

I wouldn't have thought Walls Pass/Cedar Creek is a sensitive area, though there aren't really any tracks once you get below Cedar Head.

There is a web site with the info that the poster was looking for, but I'm not clear whether I should post a link or not (and yes, the info is correct enough to get to the cave)

Found the camping cave at Cedar Creek. It is at Jamison 1:25000 490597.

Cave I have marked is 487597, just below the creek junction. Stunningly beautiful spot.
This area is no more sensitive than any other off-track spot in the Blue Mountains.

Cedar Creek seems to be pretty good at looking after itself, between the lawyer vine, neck-high bracken and lower cliff-lines. An amazing place that doesn't get the attention it deserves. And it is one of my all time favourite camp caves. There aren't many as impressive looking, as spacious, and as close to good water as that one! (Just make sure you pick the correct GR from the two above...)

I'll bet a paddle pop or two that the latter is correct. But then, what is 300m between friends? I would agree as to its outstanding quality as a camp cave. There is one nestled below a peak on Lacys Tableland that is one of the few that rates with the Cedar Creek cave.

Make mine a chocolate one.
Sorry Clarence, unless they've moved the cave since 1987, I've got to go with Chris and the Canyoner on this one.
Never thought of it for camping though; it's only two hours from the car.

First question, what edition of the map are we all referring to?? I'm using edition #2 (I don't own edition #3) of Jamison.

I think It is a case of the grid lines having moved between edition #2 (the pre-2000 ones with the white paper back) and the edition #3 (glossy ones with air photo on them). I only realised this fact now upon comparing the Katoomba ed 2 and ed 3. There is about 200m difference between these editions (both ways). I still use and refer to the old maps where possible. Either way, I think we all agree it is about 100-200m down from the creek junction?

It might just have to be paddle pops all round, my shout (too late if you haven't contributed to this thread yet). As I said, what's 300m between friends, esp if there are paddle pops going round?

The rest of us are using MGA references (3rd Ed.). To go back to AMG (2nd Ed.) subtract 1 from the 'easterlies' and 2 from the 'northerlies'. Hence our MGA 490597 becomes your AMG 489595. Your AMG 487597 is actually at the junction of the next creek upstream ie. the one coming in from due grid north. A second cave?

My maps are actually 2nd Ed. I didn't walk for many years and in my absence they changed the system. When I started again I was tearing my hair out for a while trying to figure out why nobody could read a map anymore!

Cheers,
Graeme

Don't worry, I get this from time to time too, and it has nothing to do with the series of maps people are using!!! ;-P
