Tasty Bites Jaipur Vegetables.
Sachet straight in water as it comes to a boil.
Eat out of sachet or with the pre cooked rice sachet I put in at the same time.
The water I just boiled then goes into the double choc dessert drink that will cool just enough to enjoy without burning by the time I finish eating.
15 minutes total preparation and consumption time.
Full belly, savoury and sweet satisfaction, within 5 minutes of putting my head down I'll be out for the whole night.
I enjoy this one when out for just a few nights and don't care about pack weight but some of the Tasty Bites curry sachet meals will sweat out the next day and if you don't have a change of clothes or an opportunity to wash the smell can be a bit unpleasant and embarrassing if you have to hitch back to your car or into town.
If pack weight is an issue and I know I might be too tired to cook at the end of the day then a fruity muesli bar does the trick and I'll cook up a good lunch from a dehy or freeze dry meal.

End of day 4 on last years Eldons trip (after we were all near hypothermic & buggered): cup of soup, 3 cups of tea, a pack of dehyd mangos & a pack of cashews...just couldn't be a$$ed cooking one of my proper meals. Almost always have a cup of soup once camp is set up, get the salts back in & warms the cockles :D

Usually I have delish home dehydrated meals prepped by the lovely mrs...spag bog is a fave & pretty easy to cook (hint: use Vermicelli spag, cooks in no time).

What is your GO TO Camping meal.

Postby Wolfix » Sat 28 Jul, 2012 6:15 pm

I have a very restricted diet so I haven't mastered the multi-day hike meals yet but last daywalk of 22km I took lamb rissole wraps with roasted sweet potato and parsnip, asparagus and cashew satay. Rice flour wraps. Also came up with a good energy boost snack - whole banana, golden syrup and cashew paste wrapped in rice flour wrap. I can't eat peanut butter or honey so those are my subs.

If its cold either pasta with a tomato, chilli & chorizo ragu or risotto with porcini mushrooms & real butter, both with fistfuls of garlic, onion & parmesan and a dash of wine (... drink any leftovers with dinner!). You can get the best packets of dried ingredients for these meals that are perfectly portioned for camping from Italian supermarkets, no need to skimp on quality just because your in the bush.

If its its real hot then it gets complicated... haven't quite nailed cooking real meals with non-perishables yet.

Can I take you on our next hiking trip please?
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

Everyone makes fun of canned Spam, but that's only because they've never tasted fresh Spam.

First night of a multi night hike the meal is nearly always "Penang Chicken" (chicken, carrots, onions, beans, kaffir lime, chilli, peanut butter, fish sauce, coconut cream, penang curry paste(proper asian brand), rice).
All cooked at home, placed in "foodsaver" bag, frozen with bag open, vacuum seal once frozen, back in freezer.
Wrap frozen bags in spare clothes or whatever isulation in pack.
That night, place partially thawed bags unopened in water and simmer (just to heat through), turn bags over in water if needed.
Remove bag from water, cut top off, pour into bowl, enjoy!

After dinner, use the remaining hot water for a cuppa.
The foodsaver bag can be washed out and used as a small rubbish bag.

Because the food is not dehydrated, it is fairly heavy. But for me, I am happy to carry the extra weight for the first day to have the luxury of such a meal. :-)

G'day John,
I intend checking this out soon and will report back, one thing I did find out for my trip tomorrow is that if you pre oil your steak or chicken tenderloins the vacuum process not only extracts the air but sucks out the oil which compromises the vacuum seal
so they are now double sealed :D

I agree! Nothing better than chocolate as a go to camping meal. Well, that's if you can call it a meal.
