Thurat Walls

Postby Allchin09 » Sat 01 Sep, 2012 4:40 pm

Hey,

I've just finished reading Jim Barrett's 'Kanangra Walls' book as was very inspired. The walks listed in the last chapter really interested me, especially the ones concerning the Thurat Spires. They have always fascinated me from the Kanangra Walls side so I reckon if would be unbelievable to get up close and onto of them. The book suggests a few routes up them, heading North from Kanangra Ck, but they look very steep and challenging. A route West from the intersection of Kanangra Ck and Danae Bk up Spires Buttress looks more achievable but still not easy but would be my preferred one.

Has anyone been through this area, what are the routes like, is rope required and finally, what are the views like?

It's easy to get up that way, some twit even carried a bicycle up there a while back I seem to recall. You need rope to get off the end of the top spire (i think) and into the gap under Spire Head. A hairy hand over hand will get you by. You can come up out of Danae to the gap too, at least I went down into Danae from there once. You meet Danae well below the waterfalls. Views are to die for.

A bike, that's crazy! Sounds like I will have to take a trip up there with a hand line. How much length would you recommend? Also how did you make it to the base of the Buttress?

I think we went down straight off Kilpatrick Causeway. People mostly abseil into the gap, but we doubled an 8 (or 10?) mm, 20 metre handline. It was enough to do it but abseiling would be far safer. It's a very exhilerating walk comfortably done in a day with an earlyish start. I'm pretty sure that's true about the bicycle. Just a gimmick really, but people do such pointless things.

Thanks for the heads up, it looks like I'll have to invest in some rope and abseiling gear before I head out. Maybe attend a course or two.
