You could park at Jawbones Carpark for a considerably shorter walk and less climbing, or at Cooks Mill for something in between. The Farmyard is a great campsite and feels more remote than it really is.

It's about 21 km and lots of people choose to do it as a daywalk, but that of course would be too much for a seven year old.
