Tarptent beak design?

Postby Heuston » Wed 12 Dec, 2012 6:34 am

Hi all,
I've started work on a tarptent relying mainly on Henry Shires plans with a couple of mods (tub floor, cat cut ridgeline).
I'm about to add a beak but I'm thinking of extending it to ground level to create an enclosed vestibule at the entrance to protect gear and provide a more protection. I suspect this might impact on ventilation but the beak on Shires' design just seemed to lack coverage.

Any thoughts on beak design would be most welcome.

Thanks for the suggestions Strider - I put the same questions to the man himself.
I received a very prompt reply below.

I guess it's all a balance - still interest in people views / experiences.

Hi Charlie,

Great that you're making your own. Yes, everything is a tradeoff and lower fly edges always reduce ventilation but if you need the protection then the best thing to do is to make sure that you can roll it up/back when not needed.

Thanks.
