Shoalhaven canoeing

Postby Lizzy » Fri 03 May, 2013 8:31 am

Hey- just wondering if anyone has taken a canoe down one of the tracks near Bungonia and paddled to Tallowa dam. are any of the tracks ok to drag a canoe on a little trolley down like long pt or Badgerys? Thanks Lizzy

Badgery's was always the standard put in point on the Shoalhaven. I have not been down it so cannot comment further. Long Point would be a very long carry and the top section is definitely not suitable for a trolley but it is a very nice walk that doesn't seem to get as much usage as it did.

is that accessed via the White Walk from Bungonia? We've been planning to walk up that to get to the Shoalhaven, I've been told there are great spots next to the river, and that it's a great place for canoe/kayak based camping too.
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

Badgerys & Long are a bit further down the river from Bungonia. There is lovely camping/ swimming but some are put off by the steep hike in/out. I've walked in from Bungonia but can't recall long or Badgerys - no doubt I would be better off with a packraft  but will have to stick to the canoe for the time being ....

Onestepmore- this is an old trip report you may be interested in- I think we went down the red , thru the canyon, swam across the river camped & walked out the white the next day- lovely!

Hi Onestepmore,

I've been going down to the Shoalhaven via Long Point Lookout in Tallong in recent years but go via the White track (near Bungonia) if you want to check out the gorge and the canyon walls. The boulder choke is pretty cool. Then I recommend walking a few k's down river to the campsites closer to where the Long Point and Badgery's end up at the river. Plenty of great camp sites among the casuarinas.

All of the tracks down to the Shoalhaven are very long or very steep to be carrying a canoe. On average the descent is 350-400m vertical. By the time you carry down Long Point or Badgerys there is only about a day of swift water paddling before you get to Lake Yarrunga. It is very spectacular though.

I would highly recommend (if you want to see the river and are not concerned about whether you take a canoe or not) is to do it on lilos, putting in at Greater Horseshoe Bend and pulling out at Bungonia Gorge (2 days) or Badgerys (3 days). The Blockup Gorge is pretty spectacular.

Thanks Clarence- that sounds like a good plan. We have paddled from Tallowa up the Shoalhaven and dragged the canoe up a few rapids to paddle back down- just thought it would be a fun trip but maybe not so much trying to get the canoe to the water :( Will have to look into access at Greater Horseshoe Bend... and save the trip till it warms up.
Cheers
