Cleve Cole Hut crustaceans

Postby andrewa » Mon 06 May, 2013 7:51 pm

Was on Bogong at weekend, and got some water from Cleve Cole Hut. Carefully signed " Do not drink, water not treated". We drank it anyway with no problems so far (24hrs).

Where does the water to CC come from? I recall from years ago that there were little crustaceans in the water, even mid winter - on that trip, there were about 10-15/billy . Didn't notice any in the small amount of water we got last weekend.

Does anyone know what these crustaceans are/were, and secondly what the basis is for the "do not drink" sign. It's not as though there's a huge catchment above the hut.

Between Friday night and Saturday 4pm, we had only seen 2 people going back down the Eskdale at 8am Saturday. We camped above CC hut, and were enjoying a quiet afternoon, appreciating the isolation, and quietness, when progressively 20 people walked past us over the next few hours, going down to the hut!!

Those signs are just a 'covering our *&%$#!' thing. You get them all over the place because people will do unhygienic things and then blame the water when they pick up a bug, even when it's all good clean tank water.

Simple. The water quality can't be guaranteed. Hence the sign.

I had no issue with the sign. I was more interested in the crustaceans in the water previously noted , and where the water actually comes from, hence the title. I note that there is no apparent water tank at CC...and have some recollection that it came from a soak/spring/ God/water purification plant/ who knows. It certainly tickles through the pipes of the hut in an irritating way ( the 15 mins we were there), which would have you waking up numerous times at night for a pee!

The water in CCH comes from the headwaters of Camp crk, maybe a couple of hundred metres away. I believe it runs all the time so to avoid the water freezing in the pipe.

I haven't seen the little crustaceans in my last visits, I do recall seeing them many years ago though.
