Overnight walks near canberra

Hi,
I'm looking for an introductory overnight walk in the canberra/koszi region for two new walkers. They are not overly fit, so I'm looking for an easy to medium walk - perhaps with good views or nice apline walking.

I know of plenty of walks in the victorian region but I', really after something closer to canberrs, where they live.

any advice would be appreciated.

Happy to suggest some walks but probably need some more info, by overnight are you being literal I.e 1 night? How far from canberra in terms of distance?

A couple of walks that come to mind:

- mt clear car park to horse gully hut (15km each way) 1/2 hour drive from canberra.
- light to light near Eden is a great walk
- in kosciouszko, walks around currango 2 hours drive, Schlick pass 2 1/2 hours or jagungal area 3 hours drive

If they are new, new walkers tell them to be careful in the high country. It can get dangerous even in the shoulder season.

It's me and another experienced walker with a couple of newbies....

i was thinking of Mt Feathertop or Bogong high plains in Vic, but these guys live in Canberra so I thought i'd try something closer. Thanks for the info, I'll check these walks out.

The "jagungal loop" is a great intro to walking, 3 day walk with the middle day packs off as you climb mt jagungal.

Starts at round mountain, day 1 to okeefes hut, day 2 walk to Derschkoes hut, drop the pack along the way and climb jagungal day 3 derschkoes back to round mountain.

+1 for the Light to light if you are after a easy overnighter. If you leave from Boyds Tower, its an easy walk South to overnight at Saltwater creek which is a great camping area behind the beach. Then return back to car next day, otherwise you need another car or a lift from Green Cape lighthouse the other end.

Mowarry Point is about 8km from the start and a great spot for a break. If you want to make it a bit easier, drive to Saltwater Creek and stash some water. I wouldn't trust the limited water on track. You' ll cut down a fair bit of weight without water for dinner, breakfast and general use etc.

Its a easy walk along the coastline with some great little bays along the way.

Other option would be to head to Kozi and do some day walks and camp at Nnarigo ( something like that) camping area just before Thredbo - although Im not sure of the current snow levels.

Any more info needed on light to light at Eden let me know.

slparker, the Centenary Track is about to open, next month. It is a very spectacular trail. This trail is one that your friends, will no doubt, find fascinating. It is a very interesting trail that skirts the city. I've walked and ridden the trail several times during the past few years ... it is only now that the trail is being blazed, as a Centenary project.

Also the Bicentennial National Trail runs the length of the ACT. There are several campsites with facilities along the trail.

Manjar to Black Jack is spectacular. From the fire tower, overlooking the Western Fall Wilderness is most impressive.

The Mother Woila walk is spectacular.

From the Franklin summit to Ginini Falls is spectacular. Watch the sunrise from above the falls.

The walk into Priors Hut is hard going, up Stockyard Spur from Corin Dam (for newbies) ... but it is a milestone walk. One that your friends will never forget.

Ascending to Scabby Nature Reserve ... is a classic hoot. Or even taking a slow-time to do the Settler's Walk. Camp in one of the huts. The Settlers Walk is only 10 ks, but could take a couple of weeks to seriously do.

... anyway they're a few of the top walks in this region, to research and to think about.

Mt clear to horse gully hut is somewhere between 16 and 18 km total, depending on who you believe. (16km according to the guide, 18.6 or thereabouts according to John and Lyn Daly's guide book). Definitely not 15km each way (I walked it yesterday).
