suggestions? sleep under the stars NSW road trip

Postby cal_blam » Thu 28 Nov, 2013 1:10 pm

Hi y'all. I am taking some time off between Xmas and early Jan for a road trip from Melbourne way up to Northern Rivers and back with a great friend.

We could go any which way ... through Mildura/Broken Hill, Deniliquin/Dubbo or via ACT.

We don't necessarily need organised camp sites, just great spots to put up the tent or roll out the mat and boil the billy. We won't be in a 4wd, just the little civic.

I am looking for some suggestions for favorite spots to sleep under the stars and if there is some amazing scenery, hikes, or waterholes and rivers, that is all welcome too.

Hopefully not too many mozzies, but I am guessing we will just need to take it on the chin at that time of year!

Cheers! Cal.

My vote would be the Barry Way to ACT etc...

I've been the Mildura/ Broken Hill and Deni/ Dubbo routes many times and they are very different routes, I guess it really depends on the type of landscape you would prefer to spend more of your time.

For a mix of both high country and flatlands perhaps you could go up via the hills and home via the middle.

Travis.

As far as camp sites go, there's a book called camps (and a number, I think it's up to 7 now) that has a list and map of almost all Australian roadside camps.
I'd recommend it from personal use.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Ive got a book called ' Guide to Free Campsites 2013/2014' that I picked up at the Rosehill Caravan and Camping Show. It was just under $20 ans published by On The Road Publications.
It has maps of each state and area with numbered campsites, then there is a map ref, a GPS coordinate and written description how to get to each one, plus a key as to what facilities there are there.
Some campsites have more detailed descriptions and pictures.
It may be of help to you
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

At that time of the year, it is going to be pretty hot most places.Western NSW is likely to be pretty unpleasant temperature-wise. Sticking to the coast is probably going to be cooler, and there will be opportunities for swimming.

Alternatively, the high country will be a bit cooler, but that would only be a small part of your trip.

If you go through Deniliquin the Edward River is just amazing. You would find a little spot to camp down the Stevens Weir Rd just out of town of the Wakool Rd. Super fishing as well.

Thanks for the suggestions - a guide book probably is a good idea I will try the RACV shop and see if they have one of those suggestions there.
