Where is this place? (Around Blue Mts & Jenolan Caves area)

Postby paul8 » Thu 23 Jan, 2014 12:11 am

The following is an old stereo-view photo. A guy is trying to find out where is that place. He claimed it was taken in the early 1890’s by a Sydney photographer who covered the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves areas.

Do you recognize this place? If by chance you know where it was taken, please let me know. Thanks.

My Guess is Orphan Rock??
Now closed for climbing (very unstable) and has more trees on it.

It doesn't look like Orphan Rock to me. I've been up there a few times and I can't think of a spot that looks anything like this.

The Blue Mountains is a *&%$#! big area, and there is very little discernible in the background. It'd be good to have a few more clues!

Definitey not Orphan Rock.

My first thought was an earlier incarnation of Russells Needle when it apparently was more needle like. However the background looks wrong and it's drawing a long bow to call it the Blue Mountains. I'll ask around and see what I can come up with.

Is that a telegraph pole in front of the left arm of the guy on the left hand side at the top. Could be a clue.

I took that to be a flaw in the photo.

Definitely looks like some sort of a pole with a cross member at its top in the photo.

Webguy,
The guy (who asked me where was the stereoview photo taken) has now sent me the back of the photo which identifies the photographer as WF Hall who operated from 91 Phillip St (Sydney) from 1890 to 1892. That give a pretty accurate date on when the photo was taken.

He picked up the photo from an antique shop along with about half a dozen other views in the Blue Mountains (lucky guy !)

The rock does not look like sandstone - more like limestone, so my guess is Jenolan Caves - possibly on the Lucas Rocks or one of the arches?

I've been up to the top of Lucas Rocks, and there is a pole up there, but it is made of steel as opposed to what looks like wood. Maybe it is a modern day replacement to the wooden pole from your picture.

I am just confused as to what the pole is there for. The cross member makes me think that is was for holding wires, but I don't understand why you would have to run it up to the top of a hill like that.

On having a look at my photo, I really do think that it was take at Jenolan at Lucas Rocks. Attached is a photo that we took when up there.

The ridgeline does seem to match up, but it is a little hard to tell due to the quality of the original photo. I have drawn a box around what I think is the background of the original image.
