OT August

Postby Tassie Jack » Mon 26 May, 2014 8:32 pm

Am looking to do the Overland track in August (if my work gives me some time off), leaving the car at the Lake St Clair. What options do i have to get around to Cradle Mountain?
So far looking at Tassielink it would mean spending the night in Queenstown, which is a waste of a day. Been told Maxwell coaches is best option but i going solo which is making private coaches a bit tricky to use.

Your best option IMO is to make a friend and do a car shuffle.

Walk in the other direction and then hitch?

Wont Hitch, hopefully find a car sharing arrangement or a local contact. I live in Wynyard so am not far from the top of Cradle but i been watching youtube and it looks a lot better to walk north to south than doing it the other way.

Hi there,

I was looking at doing the OT last week of August, North-South, so if you were OK with the plan we could swap keys in the middle then meetup after and swap cars back. Will save us a few hours of car shuttling, so we could get onto the track earlier on day 1.

Hi Malte,

Our plans are to now do the same walk in the same direction as you. We were planning on catching the bus in/out of Queenstown Wed 27th / Sun 31st.

Where are you guys based? How long were you planning on taking to do the walk?

Hey David. We are arriving in tasmania on tuesday morning by ferry. Our plan was to take 6 days. Are you staying overnight in queenstown? We also looke into the shuttle from lake st clair to cradle and it hecomes cheaper with more people involved. Cheers. Malte

Malte,

Our original plan was to camp near Queenstown Tues night then catch the bus.

But if you are happy to a preferable option is for us to meet somewhere, say Deloraine, Wednesday morning. We can then swap cars, we will drive to Lake St Clair and leave your car there and start walking North. You can at the same time leave our car at Cradle and start walking South. Somwhere in the middle (say New Pelion) we will meet up and swap keys back. That way both groups can walk at their own pace and no multi-hour car shuttles to be had.

Let me know your thoughts.
