Park fees NSW Kosciuszko NP

Postby Lophophaps » Thu 18 Sep, 2014 11:57 am

The NPWS sets out park fees for KNP at
http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/Natio ... x?id=N0018
It is unclear if people going through KNP, say Cooma to Khancoban via DHG or Cabramurra, pay these fees if they are not stopping overnight. Also, it may be that there is no fee to park at Round Mountain.

Can someone please clarify the above? TIA.

Probably if you park within the park you should have a pass, if your driving through no stopping.should be ok. Unless the rangers are terminators that will chase down your moving car!
That said.do they have gates at the entrances? Been many decades and im only 32.

If you are travelling through via the Snowy Mountains Highway or the Alpine way, no fee is payable.

If you stop overnight a fee may be payable on the Alpine Way. Unlikely to be requested on the SMH.

NPWS have a nice fine system, it's really a request to pay, with no 'fine' component until you pass a certain date.

From memory, southbound through traffic on the Alpine Way is given a free transit pass at the entry station, which allows parking at two places within the NP: the fuel bowsers in Thredbo and the power station lookout at the southern end. If you stop anywhere else you are supposed* to have a proper pass -although you'd be unlucky to get hit with a brief stop at a lookout or two. Northbound on either route is irrelevant as there is no entry station - fee-liable visitors are supposed to pick up a pass at Khancoban, but for through traffic you just drive on.
Otherwise, as climberman said.

NPWS have advised:
"In regards to park use fees, they are only charged on the Alpine Way (the road passing from Thredbo to Khancoban via Dead Horse Gap) and only if you are stopping and leaving your car for any period of time i.e. coffee in Thredbo, swim at Geehi camping at Tom Groggin etc. There is still no charge at all on the Khancoban, Cabramurra, Adaminaby Road including Round Mountain car park."

The Cabramurra Road and starting from Round Mountain appeals.

Why do you think I always started my Christmas/New Year rambles from there?

Um, Communist, turn left before Khancoban? No, that's not right. Flat walking to start the day? Appeals, surely a factor. Less expensive? Probably. Mind you, if your Christmas/New Year ramble is to the Western Arthurs, starting at Round Mountain is not advised. I speak from experience.

That's a trip report I'd love to read.

The Western Arthurs trip was not successful. It took several days of peak bagging to walk from Round Mountain to Thredbo, where I hitched to Cooma to meet the charter flight to Hobart. At Hobart it was a short drive to the start at Scotts Peak Dam. At this point I realised that on the journey from Round Mountain I had eaten too much food, and did not have enough for the main walk. So I reversed my route, finishing at Round Mountain a week later.

Round Mountain is not a good place to start for the Western Arthurs. Indeed, from my home in Sandy Bay I really can’t see why I took the boat to Melbourne and drove to Round Mountain. Now I know better – next time there’s a SW Tassie trip I’ll stop at Devonport.
