I think whether your tent gets shredded might depend on its construction, specifically whether the fabric is tensioned or not. If it is tensioned, there will be a bit of give when the hailstone hits, and it will bounce back. If it is lying on the ground, you may actually get more damage.

I remember seeing cars years ago when the roof was curved and tensioned. Modest-sized hail stones would just bounce off as the roof gave a bit. otoh, the bonnet was usually flat, and usually reinforced inside. Dents everywhere because there was only the metal to absorb the shock.

If I'm on a building site visit I take my cowboy-hardhat along and get a few cheers from the site crew.

Because the hardhat sits elevated above your head they are exceptionally cool/shady in hot weather and still able to resist the odd brick/tool dropped from above.

Hail is no problem...
