Wanted- Alpacka 'Yukon Yak' Pack raft

Postby Nuts » Wed 04 Mar, 2015 11:22 am

Hi, i'm keeping an eye out for one of these (or a Llama possibly) for a friend. Have an explorer 42 (a new one, unused) that we (ie. he) may consider swapping :)
A long shot, I know, but if you are considering an upgrade*, show us what you got!!

Hey
How much are you looking for for the explorer?

Wow, I didn't realise that you could get packrafts from Alliexpress.....or wouldn't you?

Have you tried the packrafting forum. Unfortunately they are getting expensive again with the change in the US$.....my first Llama bought in 2007 was US$700, which amounted then go about AUD$1050! ( I bought a second "seconds" one for US$500 a year later) - best outdoor toys I've ever bought, I think!

Ha, yes- No! I barely have faith in all those taped joints as is without some near-enough cn craftmanship.
I'm still just a novice though really, only a handfull of days here n there. Had a couple of these since the first style alpaca but circumstances, time/warmer seasons rarely align for big trips and longer trips are the motivation. I do like to keep them inflated and look at them now and then :)

Hi freepete,

It may happen but i'm not really keen to sell it outright. A straight swap for a late main-line alpacka or pretty much the replacement cost so we can buy another. I'm considering just buying a second larger/single person boat new (that bakraft does look interesting..). If that happens and when it arrives I may reconsider, anyhow i'll put it on sale here first (if so). It's a nice big boat (now 'lightly used' :) ) perfect for bigger easier waters.

The $ parity was great but they are now much dearer, not only +30%ish but also well above duty limits.. (+10% +). Doing the math on the explorer42 for instance around $1600au all in  and it doesn't have a spray deck option (+$300 or so). (This is one pointy end of cottage business that I would really encourage to a local maker or collaboration :) )

PS. is there a popular pr forum? that alpacka one seems to have the lights out :?

Yep, the Alpacka forum dissociated as the "American Packrafting Association" or similar, and I lost interest immediately upon being asked to join the association, with its "cover your *&%$#!" regulations - I remember once posting about a DIY inflatable PFD, and getting a pm saying I should have added a legal disclaimer to my post!

Anyway, it still exists at

http://packrafting.org/forums/

And there's a classifieds bit.

My first packraft/paddle etc was over the $1000 limit. I seem to recall that it may have been "devalued" after some brief discussion.

Yeah, thanks, I have found the APA site again. It's a shame, it seems to be very slow, it's still a good resource at least.
I'll look for the NZ forum, thanks Lizzy.
Got a loaner for the short term so not in such a rush.

I will add that the $$ don't seem so much when you see what they can do and spread over the life of the Alpacka. I have had two now over several years and they have changed my adventure travel giving so many possabilities. Well worth the dollars.

Thanks rahvintzu, I may have been interested (for myself) but have ordered a self-bailing raft (i'll close this adv) You should post that in the marketplace here, would bring a relatively good price.

It is a big price for what they are. Though iv'e seen what others have done with them and imagine a long life span. With creaky knees it's tempting just to gorilla your way down shingle rapids once you realise they are seriously tough :)
