I'm a bit over weight so that 'blows that out of the water' for a start!

@ 90 kgs myself I have enough trouble carting myself around let alone another me on my back!

The "pack that weighs upwards of 90 kilograms" part takes me out of this. I'm pretty fit but that, for me, is just nuts.

And back when I was in the CMF we thought 45 kilos was massive. Water is a massive part of that 90kg and I doubt anybody enjoys the hump.
But I must say that when I do the shopping using my big day pack to carry stuff home in I do feel a real benefit after a while but that would seldom exceed 15 kilos or to put it another way 15% of my body weight

Am I the only one that's sceptical about this statement? Maybe someone here can back it up.

soldiers may ruck up to 40 kilometres (or more) a day, grunting a pack that weighs upwards of 90 kilograms.

I have heard of guys in the military carrying 60 or so kilos when unloading choppers or trucks etc but only for relatively short distances like moving the gear from a chopper or truck to a supply dump or into a compound. Never that much while on patrol or for training.

I watched a show on SAS selection recently and from memory those guys were made to carry 28kgs on the forced march part of their fitness testing, 20kg in their pack and an 8kg steel bar to simulate a heavy weapon (they had to cover 20k's in under 3:15min). Now these guys are FIT but that's nowhere near the weight suggested either and they were doing it tough!

Given they have just tarted up a US written article with a picture of royalty perhaps they forgot to translate 90 lbs, just changed it to kg.

I always thought that the verb to ruck applied to scrummage in rugby, but the OE dictionary indicates it to mean "to squat, crouch, cower huddle together". and a rucksack is defined as "A kind of knapsack worn by tourists".

And those SUL proponents are trying to turn us into caloric reservoirs. Evil!

Yeah I think that's what has happened. Still, 40 odd kg's is nothing to laugh at!

Perhaps But if you throw in 2 * 20 litre jerrycans of water onto your sustainment and combat load 90kg isn't out of the question
I know what a belt of MG weighs but humping it 40 klicks ? doubt it and that never clicked with me
A mate did the selection course with 126 a while ago and they had to cover 40 kilometers with full load in 24 hours, team effort and they were humping handled steel boxes to simulate the base radios ect
The huge weights are why mules are often used and why the US is looking to develop mechanical mules

You blokes just need to lift your game. Fill this to the brim, slip it on and you're off flying with enough supplies for a nuclear winter. You might not be able to walk, due to the bone crushing weight, but I didn't say I've got all the answers.

I want to see him walk up or down a hill with that pack on

The funniest thing about the article to me is that they don't think to make the connection between carrying weight in a pack and bushwalking!
