TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Synmat UL7 double mat modification

Wed 05 Aug, 2015 10:42 am

Ive been hiking with my GF for a lil while now but she's getting annoyed at sleeping separated on a different mat/Sleeping bag...

SO I thought it would be a good idea to try and modify 2 of my Exped Ultralight Synmat 7's (I own 5 of them).... My idea so far is to put two small tabs of Velcro hooks on the back of the matts and use a strip of Velcro to approx. 50cm long and use the pressure of our bodies to keep the matts together. I would imagine id need two of these straps to hold it all together...

The sleeping bag is easy as I bought all One planet bags and they zip together nicely...

Any experience in such a thing? Too much pressure on the Velcro? Gluing Velcro to the matts? Any advice welcome!

Thanks
Kingsley

Exped make a coupler kit for this purpose if you don't feel like doing it yourself.

The couple kits are good but even better is a double mat cover in conjunction with it. Better again is a selection of mattress covers suited to each season.
Silnylon or similar on the bottom for protection, silk and cotton blend for summer, LW fleece for the shoulder seasons etc
Because I sleep with multiple mats in winter I found this a better; if slightly heavier; solution to the mats slipping off each other but the velcro straps do work

Do you have a link for such a mat cover? Did you make them or can you buys them? Cheers

I made mine. it's the simplest job I can think of, 2 flat bits of fabric cut to size and joined at the end and sides
We are renovating so I can't get to the part of the shed where all this stuff is kept or I'd post a picture but it is exactly the same as a Doona cover
