Whisky and brandy is often distilled in stainless steel. Foid grade ss is perfectly fine.

Does anyone else have a piece of ultralight gear that is to expensive and delicate to use?

Haha, yes. During a 9-day trip last May, I was teased because the only spare clothes I carried were undies, and when I was washing my clothes I was roaming around camp in my undies. So for my next 9-day trip I bought some ultra-ultra-light nylon shorts.

These OMM Sonic shorts only weigh 22 grams, and work great as laundry-day shorts. But, as I discovered, you can't really sit down on anything hard (e.g. a log or a rock) without them shredding to pieces. So I bought another pair (not cheap!) and now I strictly wear them while standing up.

I was aware of that, hence my confusion. I have no idea what grade of stainless my shotties were made from, but they definitely were not good to drink from, even though the contents had not been in the shotty for long.

Perhaps I need to carry out further testing

@Lamont +1 for 250ml coke bottles. Also great for car camping containers for cooking oil, detergent, bleach/water cleaner, vinegar or method.

I think the 1.25 litre would work better. Hey what about showing some UL class and travelling with a flagon without the thumb hold to save 8 grams.

Perhaps the wrong reaction in the wrong topic, but....

...when I visited Australia for the first time last year to walk the Larapinta, Bibbulmun and Tasmania Overland, I was pleasantly surprised by the relaxed attitude that Australian bushwalkers have towards walking and their gear.

Having walked the PCT and AZT in the USA, everybody there seems to be obsessed with the weight of their pack and how many miles per day they cover, which I personally find totally uninteresting. In contrast, on the Bibbulmun Track the discussions with other bushwalkers were mainly about the flowers and the wildlife that we came across and not all that stuff about who is the lightest and the fastest. I found that really refreshing! I hope you wonderful people keep that attitude towards bushwalking.

During my misspent youth De Bortoli used to have a very lightweight plastic flagon filled with a particularly cheap red of questionable palatability obtainable from a bottle shop on Parramatta Rd Annandale. Can't remember whether they had a thumb hold or not. They were returnable to reclaim a small deposit.

The current De Bortoli Cab Merlot in a cask is however a very fine drop. (imho)

And on a slightly more serious UL note, has anyone used these cask bladders as a pillow?

If what Roger says, I can see them doing double duty, or drink once and sleep well on the cheap in future.

Not successfully! If my head moves even slightly off-centre, the air shifts to the uphill side and rolls my head downhill.

Agree with ribuck. Most uncomfortable.
You can get air-bag pillows with a join down the middle, but I never found them very good either.
These days I use an Exped pump/pillow. Very comfortable, and it blows up our airmats as well.

Not since I was in my 20's,other pillows utilised in that time included tiled floors and bricked fireplace borders- not exactly UL though.

That is nice feedback to hear Birdman. I think that - caution huge generalisation- most Australian's tend to be laid back and not take themselves too seriously, at least the type who like bushwalking and carrying fingerholdless flagons strapped to their chests anyway.
