I have just made some preliminary enquiries as far as Hobart is concerned. St Johns run the Workplace Level 2 course every Monday and Tuesday (two day course) at a cost of $170.

I found mine (St Johns) the other day. Out of date, needs updating.

OT: These Courses from Bob Cooper Desert Survival have always interested me, being a mainlander frequenting the desert. They don't really seem to cover basic first aid though. Perth based, so the costs mount up quick. The advanced courses look to be quite challenging.

NSW people may want to check out Bushwalking Wilderness Rescue's Remote Area course run by Dave Sheppard. (BWRS is associated with the Confederation of Bushwalking Clubs.)

This course is planned "for bushwalkers by bushwalkers", and Dave has been a bushwalker, paramedic and numerous other things for something in excess of 30 years. The course is conducted in a bush setting with realistic and challenging scenarios, and the price (discounted to $250) is very reasonable for four (long) days. 30 people from my club did it last year and none regretted spending the money.

They also run a Senior First Aid course:

Weekend St John Ambulance Senior First Aid courses are a great way to gain some basic first aid knowledge. There is some instruction on splinting and slinging of limbs which bushwalkers could find useful that is no longer commonly taught. The discounted fee of $105 is a considerable saving to learn First Aid with fellow bushwalkers. Additional family members can receive a discount. The next course will be on May 22 – 23, 2010.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but just curious as to whether anything like the BWRS happens in Tas? Would love to do some walking/expedition specific courses, but haven't seen a great deal going on down here (based on a google and forum search ).

Dave Sheppard has been looking at running courses in other states/locations. Please email him shepparddavid1@bigpond.com. Talk with him about covering travel and accommodation costs. Sounds like a great idea.
If that tip dries up, perhaps try Stuart from WildAid http://allaid.com.au/ who also runs a great Wilderness First Aid course. I've done both and can recommend each one.

So, out of interest, if BWRS were to come down to conduct a course, who here would be keen? If we can get enough interest, I'll get in touch with Mr Sheppard and see whether we can organise something! Sounds like they do a 4 day course over 2 weekends. Price quoted above is $250, but probably would increase to somewhere around $300-$325 I imagine, in order to cover flights/accommodation etc, depending on how many want to do this!

I for one would be quite keen, so let me know if you are too!
