Members in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have located an injured 74-year-old man from West Launceston who activated a personal locator beacon (PLB) in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park this morning.
Other walkers carrying the PLB came across the injured man and offered assistance leaving him with the device until help arrived.
The man suffered an injured knee and was unable to walk out unassisted. His wife, who had been walking with him in the park, left and returned to the car to raise the alarm. This was prior to other walkers assisting with a PLB and then continuing their walk. The man was airlifted back to his car.
Of note the rescue crew had difficulty locating the man because of a weak and inaccurate position signal given by the PLB. This is believed to be because the battery on the PLB had expired in 2017. This is a timely reminder, especially coming into the warmer months, to check that all emergency equipment including PLBs, EPIRBS and flares are not outside of their expiry dates prior to embarking on your activity.

A man in his 60s has been rescued after he fell while caving in remote area of the West Coast late yesterday.

He had slipped and fallen several metres while ascending a ladder within the cave. He was with 3 companions, and two of them hiked for several hours to be able to call for assistance.

A search and rescue team involving Ambulance Tasmania, Tasmania Police, SES and the Northern Caverneers Caving Club reached the man about 1am this morning.

He was airlifted out by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania a short time ago, and taken to the RHH. His injuries are not life threatening.

Well done to everyone involved in the rescue - a great outcome!

Westpac Rescue Helicopter – Medical Evacuation from Overland Track

Approximately 7.00am, the Tasmania Police dispatched the Westpac Rescue Helicopter for the medical evacuation of an injured bushwalker, near the Pine Valley Hut region of the Overland Track.

Tasmania Police were alerted to injured bushwalker, who was in a larger party of walkers after they activated a personal locator beacon (EPIRB).

Tasmania Police have praised the group, who were all experienced walkers, were very well prepared and had an EPIRB with them. The walker was injured when climbing a rocky and steep area and a boulder dislodged from a walker above injuring the man, who was later treated at the Royal Hobart Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A police spokesperson said, “this a great example were things can often go wrong in remote locations. We commend the party of walkers who were all very experienced, had the appropriate equipment including an EPIRB with them, ensuring that the injured walker was well cared for and could be evacuated to receive the medical treatment they needed, effectively and efficiently.”

The spokesperson said “we wish all walking parties were as well prepared, something as simple as being prepared with an EPIRB can save your life.”

Gawd, sounds like a bit of luck it wasn't far worse. Have heard some horror stories in talus/boulder fields, and witnessed a couple of near-misses myself. As much as I like bouncing amongst the big rocks, you've so got to have your wits about you. Glad to hear everyone was properly prepared.

Police including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania have rescued a 58 year old Hobart bushwalker after he activated a personal locator beacon in the state’s far south-west this afternoon.

The patient had injured his leg in a fall and was forced to activate his PLB. Tasmania Police was notified of the activation about 4pm.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the scene, with the bushwalker being airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment.

Search and Rescue members in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania yesterday rescued an injured walker from Barn Bluff in the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park.

The walker was well prepared for his intended walk, but unfortunately injured himself near the summit. He was flown out with his walking partner to receive medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly after 4:00pm today, an adventurer who was hiking with her young son became lost in the greater Freycinet area on the state's East Coast.
She contacted police and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania was dispatched to the area.
The two hikers were located by the helicopter on Mount Graham just after 5:30pm and safely airlifted from the area.

As a result of a distress beacon activation reported via the Australian Maritime Safety Authority last night, Tasmania Police was notified this morning of an injured 25 year old Victorian bushwalker requesting medical assistance at Pelion Hut in the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania was dispatched to the area and arrived around 10am. The man was unable to walk due to his injuries and evacuated from the area by police. He was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment for an injured knee. The man was part of a guided walking group.

Inspector Darren Hopkins said, “This was a good example of a bushwalker group being properly prepared and equipped with safety equipment which included a distress beacon and satellite phone. Personal locator beacons can be purchased for as little as $300 and they do save lives.”

**UPDATE - Five people have been rescued from the Franklin River in the state’s south west after their raft overturned.

Police were notified of the incident shortly before noon today, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the area.

On arrival at the scene, it was established that a group of recreational rafters had been involved in a rafting incident on the Franklin River two days earlier.

The group had only been able to notify authorities today.

Five people received non-life threatening injuries in the incident.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is being utilised to transport the patients due to the remote location of the area. **

EARLIER - The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is currently being dispatched to the Franklin River after a report that a raft has overturned in the area.

There are no confirmed injuries at this stage.

The raft is reported to have overturned in the Nasty Notch area of the Franklin river.

Yes, I went looking and found that. And it's weird, because when I first noticed the helicopter it was parked just above Nasty Notch, then took off and started downstream, dropping fairly low over the river. And there was a group prepping for a rafting trip when I drove past the Collingwood bridge late Wednesday afternoon.

Obviously I entered a timewarp on Saturday morning, as it seems unlikely they'd send the crew back out there just because someone on that New Year's trip[ had lost their brand new iPhone ...

The Tasmania Police Westpac rescue helicopter has been activated to the Franklin River for a medivac we are told.

Police say: The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is responding to a Personal Locator Beacon activation in the Great Ravine area of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Tasmania Police were advised of the PLB activation by AMSA.

A 61-year-old woman from Tasmania's North-West was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital with non-life-threatening. She had been part of a group kayaking on the Franklin River.

A 20 year old South Australian man has been rescued from Trestle Mountain in the state’s south after becoming stranded near the summit. Emergency services were contacted at 3:45pm after the man became overwhelmed after climbing a technical section of the mountain near the peak. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was utilised to transport the man due to the remote location of the area. Tasmania Police would like to remind bushwalkers and mountain climbers that they need to be adequately prepared for any planned trip or excursion. Walkers should ensure that they take the time to plan their outing properly and carry adequate clothing and food. They also need to understand the local weather and terrain conditions. Anyone who completes a bushwalk or rock climb should let others know where they are going and when they plan to return. They should also carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and ensure their phone battery is adequately charged.

Further to our earlier report Tasmania Police confirmed the incident with TVN saying “Around 11.50am police received a report of a personal locator beacon activated in the Prion Beach area of the South West National Park. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to assist a bushwalker with an ankle injury.”

There was also a rescue during the week where a woman set off her PLB at Lee’s Paddocks, rescue crews walked in, and the rescue helicopter picked her up due to bad weather the next morning, suffering hypothermia.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, along with a ground party comprising Police, SES and ambulance personnel were deployed to the Meander Falls Track area around 12.30pm Friday.

About 2.45pm the Police Rescue Helicopter located the party and winched a paramedic to the group.


A 14-year-old boy was then winched from the area and transported to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police remain on the scene of an incident at Mt Geryon in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

Police have confirmed that four people were climbing the mountain when one person fell from a significant height about 9.30am today.

Attempts have been made to access the person to assess their condition, however the terrain is extremely difficult to access.

A vertical rescue specialist team is currently en route via helicopter to access the area and assess the person’s condition.

The three other people are uninjured.

Further updates will be provided when available.

Update 1:45 Rescue Helicopter is onsite conducting the rescue.

Not good,

Sadly, a man has died while climbing at Mt Geryon in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

Police and emergency services were notified by a member of a climbing party that a man had fallen from a significant height while climbing the south peak of Mt Geryon about 9.30am this morning.

Tasmania Police including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, access to the difficult terrain was possible via winch and the man was confirmed deceased a short time ago.

Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this sad time.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Rescue chopper
A man in his 20s has been winched to safety after falling down a cliff at Doctors Rocks near Wynyard last night.

The rescue helicopter was dispatched as the location was considered too dangerous for a land-based rescue.

He was flown to hospital with an ankle injury.

It was busy 24 hours for the chopper after being sent to two groups of walkers who had activated their personal locator beacons in the Eldon Range, between Queenstown and Lake St Clair.

Difficult conditions and terrain had seen them separated.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old hiker on the Overland Track had to be airlifted home after injuring his knee.

Well, the Castle Mountain one was definitely Abel fever overcoming common sense.

The kayakers intrigue me. There are plenty of places to pull out and camp along the lakeshore if it gets too rough for the boats.

I get the impression the kayakers were just out for the day from the visitor centre - ie no camping gear.
I doubt they would have lugged kayaks from Cradle Mt to Narcissus.

They may have been on a day trip to Ida, getting caught out by a weather change. If so, it's likely they would want to cross to the opposite shore of the lake on the return and may have encountered trouble doing so.
