Bushfire Watch and Act – Overland Track (area)

Postby bumpingbill » Wed 05 Feb, 2025 10:37 am

This is a Bushfire Watch and Act message for Windermere, Pine Forest Moor and surrounds.

There is an uncontrollable bushfire at Canning Peak.

The fire is travelling towards Overland Track. That is not contained.

Embers, smoke, and ash may fall on Windermere, Pine Forest Moor and surrounds and threaten you before the main fire arrives.

Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania is attending. Conditions are expected to be changeable.

Looks like the TWC hut at Pine Forest Moor has burnt down. I wonder what this means for their next few seasons.

Overland Track is open from tomorrow 24th February 2025

We are pleased to advise that the Overland Track will reopen to booked walkers from tomorrow (Monday 24 February 2025).

The track has been closed since 5 February 2025 due to a fire at nearby Canning Peak, which has destroyed a hut, bridge and approximately one kilometre of track boardwalk.

The fires on the West Coast of Tasmania have burnt a combined area of more than 97,700 hectares.

Following impact assessment and remediation works, the track has now been declared safe to reopen.

There are still active bushfires in the vicinity and the public is advised to check the following websites for updated information:

Fire updates: www.alert.tas.gov.au
Park and track closures: www.parks.tas.gov.au/alerts and www.fire.tas.gov.au
