Ahh close again, but not quite... the big shadow on the left might be Alders........??
Thu 12 Aug, 2010 7:03 pm
Ok then the race is on, is it from Taurus?
Thu 12 Aug, 2010 7:07 pm
Look thats probably close enough. I dont THINK it was Taurus but I cannot be sure. We stopped at Taurus and as well as a bit further along the beggarys. so it would be from one of those spots and you are either right or close enough/getting closer...
your go Bap

I never got a view from the top of Taurus, only the clouds.
Where am I?
view from Mt Cripps

So we are looking at Mts Tyndall, Murchison and Read.... hmmm
Thu 12 Aug, 2010 11:08 pm
Looks pretty tough - could it be Mt Cripps?
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 7:47 am
Yep eggs, got it again. The interesting thing in this picture is a little Mt called the Sharks Fin you can see sticking out of the clouds in the midground.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 8:52 am
I had noticed that curious peak. What took you to Mt Cripps in the early morning?
Next one - and what time of year?:

- From Byron Gap looking over Gould Plateau to Geryon and the Acropolis, the slopes adorned with golden fagus

Well I will take the bonus point, I'd say April (fagus). 22nd April in fact. And to go one better, 2007!
At almost 2:15pm.
I know what you're looking at, and I know roughly where from, but no time to scour maps at the moment. A reasonable amount of zoom (125mm) puts you a bit of distance away too, to the southwest at an estimation.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 9:33 am
More to the south actually. Somewhere near the Guardians?
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 9:45 am
I was out doing a number of walks that day (Cripps, Cattley, Charter and Housetop) and I love being out in the bush in the early morning. It is a great view from the top of Mt Cripps without to much effort.
Now eggs in your photo you can see the cliffs of Goulds Plateau so are you somewhere on SE side of Manfred?
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 10:17 am
Bap is getting close - but I am at a named place on an established track.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 10:37 am
Maybe Byron Gap?
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 11:03 am
Yes - Byron Gap it was.
Looking over Gould Plateau to Geryon and the Acropolis flanked with golden fagus.
Note - the year was 2008 - my camera date was out by a year on that trip.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 11:07 am
OK - a really easy one but maybe not how you would normally see this area ... the photographer was in a helicopter at the time!

Yep, you're right.
In a helicopter!
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 12:28 pm
Is everyone asleep today? .... I thought the white sand would give it away.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 12:43 pm
There's lots of white sand in Tassie. Could be Cooks beach??
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 1:20 pm
There might be sand at Cooks Beach - but I have been scanning the distance carefully to pick up all the distinctive landmarks and I would suggest the skyline is more akin to the view from the Friendly Beaches or Bay of Fires than from Cooks.
In fact, I think I have been able to rule out any of Tassie's lakes as well

Edit - trying to be serious - most of the white beaches I know in the NE have rocky points jutting out rather than sand.
This suggests it is near a river/lagoon outelt in order to build the sand bar.
Perhaps Policeman's Point? [2nd edit - Google Satellite even shows a similar seaweed pattern - and it is from a tastrax helicopter...]
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 5:05 pm
Well its Friday afternoon and I am feeling generous so eggs gets it with Friendly Beaches. I think it was about half way along the beach.... unfortunately I was driving the support vehicle that day and not in the chopper. This was taken as part of the PWS Great Short Walks photoshoot by Geoffrey Lea. A mad day with a couple of hours helicopter time, a great photographer and his off-sider madly loading film at a furious pace whilst flying at Wineglass, Hazards and Friendly Beaches.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 5:23 pm
Normally that would not be allowed since I had worked my way up to BoF - but it seems like there was little in the photo to go on.
I do see it in Google Satellite now - right down the south end.
Anyway:

That's it

I must have a guess.
Is L Jupiter behind the moraine? ridge in the centre of the pic?
I am sure I am wrong.
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 10:16 pm
not the arthur range rob, about 80 km from there actually
Fri 13 Aug, 2010 10:52 pm
80kms? That eliminates the South Coast area and puts you up near the Denisons
Sat 14 Aug, 2010 1:31 am
Looks like Mt Wright
Sat 14 Aug, 2010 11:04 am
Yeah I still haven't been around the Denisons.. so not Mt Wright.
It's quite an obscure place really, this other view may help.
