Higgs Track

Hello all,

Here's a few pics from a walk up Higgs Track last Friday with a couple of mates. The first section up to Lady Lake Hut is a slog!! It just keeps going and going  From there on, it is really really really enjoyable 'wandering'......we went through to Ironstone Hut where we got the wood heater going for an hour before heading back.

We were pretty fortunate with the weather, it really added to the mood actually. All the way to Ironstone Hut it was quite overcast, a bit foggy, very slight showers at times.....and obviously some very chilly gusts!! (but I wouldn't say that it was 'cold'). We could see silhouettes of hills/mountains and the lakes were very interesting in this weather; it had a real sense of isolation. As we left the hut and started making our way back, the weather passed and it was quite sunny with blue skies and patches of cloud. This enabled us to view more distant hills/mountains with patches of snow around the place; and as we headed back towards the tiers we were able to enjoy the views out onto the plains.

It really is a beautiful place up there, I would love to spend some more extended time in the area as I know a lot of you have!!

A few snow fights along the way added to the fun also

Hey Mark, yeah, it's a fun little hut, right at the foot of Forty Lakes Peak. It bunks 4 (2 mattresses in the hut), has a nice little wood heater, stone floor and walls. Beaut little spot overlooking Lake Nameless. Would love to spend some time there one day!!

Hi Phil,
Great little walk.
I have crossed to the hut from the WoJ one year along the Ritters Track (although I think we were off the original track for most of the way but found the odd cairn here and there). The hut was occupied when we got there, but would have been too cosy for our largish group.
The hut was a welcome sight after three days on the track. I was surprised how far back it is from the lake's edge - there must be a story behind its location. The hut is very neat and in good condition.
Not much camping space anywhere close to the hut though, so we camped higher up the slope on some small terraces. A bit squeezy but we all managed to find enough flat space to pitch a motley collection of tents.
Love to go back and use the area as a base to explore some of the rocky 'lumps' to the east.
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Phil, Andrew,

what's the inside of Nameless/Ironstone Hut like? 2 of us are planning to go up there in a couple of weeks, it looks like a good place to be based. I've been to Lady Lake Hut - very nice - but I don't require that level of luxury!

Hi Leggy

Here's a couple of pics from in side the hut; a fantastic little place to reside for a couple of days I reckon!!

Enjoy!!

Nice shots Phil, certainly does look like a cool little hut and area to explore!

Yes, it is a nice hut by comparison to most I have visited. I haven't been to Lady Lake Hut, so can't comment on that one - I think it is newer than the Lake Nameless Hut and all timber construction. Still would be concerned about little critters scuttling around. Like all huts, in the end they seem to attract a fair amount of attention from local wildlife - dry, warm, and food scraps are always attractive features. In foul conditions it would be a nice place to stay nonetheless.
