Blackdown Tableland

Was up at Blackdown Tableland last week on an advanced rope rigging course. Of course during the sessions I managed to sneak off and take some scenery pics. Here's on I thought this forum might find appealing. Rare for the waterfalls up there to be flowing at this time of the year. We have had a lot of rain though.

Blackdown is in central Queensland near Blackwater. It is now a national park. It is quite high as well at about 900 metres so can be quite cool in winter and pleasant in summer when the surrounding plains are unbearably hot. It is part of the Expedition Range. The rock type is sandstone. Some of the waterfalls are huge with one being at least a hundred and fifty metres tall. From Blackwater it looks like two sides of a billiard table has risen out of the flat plains. Well worth spending some time exploring the cliff lines and the various waterfalls.

Blackdown Tableland is about 2 hours west of Rockhampton if that helps you locate where it is in Queensland. And thanks for the vote of confidence in my pic.

Thanks mate, yes it is pretty spectacular. When I first saw this place 30 years ago I was agog at the massive blocks of stone that had calved off in the past and slid down the scree slope taking out all the trees before them. Then to see the amazing water worn formations was the icing on the cake. Rainbow Falls is a must see. There are some unique flora and fauna in that area that grows no where else. There is also remnant primitive ferns left over from prehistoric times too. Definitely well worth a visit for a few days or more.

I've driven past it at least ten times and never had the time to get in and explore. Have to make sure I do it next trip.

ps: That's a damn good photo. Can't have been easy balancing the light.
