Here is a selection of photos from my recent trip to Frenchmans Cap. I was lucky enough to have a beautiful day to summit, with views 360 degrees!
Sharlands Peak, White Needle and Barron Pass
Clytemnestra. Once you get off the Frenchman it looks quite easy
White Needle, from Barron Pass. Its very steep, and only climbable in dry conditions.
Lake Tahune
The Southern Face of Frenchmans

And some more shots
This was one of the many cliffs I had to abseil as I found a rather dodgy and dangerous route off Sharlands Peak. Definately should have gone back the way I came.

Another one of the dangerous sections of my descent. I came from the top of this gully, some 100m up.
And finally some shots of the Frenchman.
7 points for me!!

Well done Jared.
How was the Loddens??
Mon 15 Nov, 2010 4:22 pm
Loddons were quite dry. Philps Lead however, was dry coming in, a raging river coming out. We were knee-waist deep in water and mud at time. The climb up Mt Mullen is worse than the Loddons I think.

Nice work; I like some of those shots, rekindled some memories for me on the cap a few years back. Pretty gutsy on the descent off Sharlands Peak.

Nice pics Jared, a memorable trip I'm sure!
Didn't your mum teach you to smile for the camera? You look a little concerned

No action shots of the abseiling Jared?
What diameter rope did you take / use?
Tue 16 Nov, 2010 10:02 am
Abseil! Awesome, a bit of Bear Grylls action!
Good piccies.
Tue 16 Nov, 2010 7:22 pm
No action shots, mainly because I was solo. It was a bit of a mission to get a rope system set up for it. I only had a 15m 8mm dynamic rope. Enough to hold my weight, but not much more.
Bear Grylls action, but without helicopters, hotels and a well trained team around me.

So theres now a length of rope hanign up there??? Or did you manage to get it down?
Tue 16 Nov, 2010 7:38 pm
nah I've got it down. I just tied the ends together to make a big loop, and tied it around my waist
Tue 16 Nov, 2010 7:57 pm
ummm... Children please do not try this at home.
Tue 16 Nov, 2010 8:13 pm
Errrm yeh Jared, do you have a death wish??
Tue 16 Nov, 2010 8:28 pm
haha yeah it was pretty dangerous, but it got to the point where it was my only option. Either that or get a chopper out of there, but I wasn't ever really in that much trouble. The ropes were more for peace of mind than anything. I probably could have got by without it.

For some reason I thought you were kidding...

Dare I say it, also without the experience and skill... not a very smart move to go doing a dodgy abseil by yourself. It only takes one screw up.

Yeah its not something I plan to repeat. I just got stuck and couldn't go back the way I had come. I learnt my lesson.

You said that after the Warthurs stuff-up, too . . .

I learnt a different lesson. WArthurs was an accident, not really a lesson

Thanks to Bear, I now know this is what climbers call getting 'rimrocked'

Bear would've used a kamikaze knot

There is another word climbers use for that situation that is three letters shorter and begins with "F".
