OLT from 1942

Hi everyone, my Grandma just sent me a HUGE number of slide scans from her and Pop's adventures around Tassie and the world during the 1940s. Included are a nice collection from one of Pop's OLT trips in 1942 that I thought you kids might enjoy!

I'm dubious about some of the labels that were with the files so if you know where something is please let me know

Oh Man the History. What great shots!! I love the size of their packs! looks lighter then now. I wish I could cut tree branchs for my bed.

That last shot looks like the King William I, Milligans peak and Mt Pitt.

Yeah I wasn't sure about the last one... Grandma had it labelled as Frenchmans, but I'm pretty sure its not...

Tried to examine a few comparative photos for the first Barn Bluff photo which questions a reversal.
I am pretty sure this is not from the current climbing route up Barn Bluff - even if reversed.
That face is not the climbing face on the north side - but is probably the other south east facing side.

I don't know how much the OT has varied with time - but the outline is not far off the view from Lake Will - but clearly they are on a ridgeline.
Perhaps the ridge that heads out to the north of Lake Will?
Maybe the route that now skirts around that ridge line used to go over it - or they did a side trip along it?
Or maybe they camped at Lake Will and climbed up the slope for a view?

yes thats where its from - the image as shown is not reversed.
I've got an old pic of lower down with Lake Will - same mountain profile and ridgeline.

Thanks for putting these up. It has reminded me that my father walked through the OT in about 1942 or 1943 just before he went in to the army to be stationed in Darwin. He had photos, too, which I must get out and scan so they can be kept in a suitable form.

The ninth picture "Somewhere near Du Cane Hut" looks very much like Mt Pillinger but I haven't seen it from this angle so close up. It is great to see these old photos. I imagine you would treasure seeing your Pop with the same enthusiasm for bushwalking in his youth as you do now.

I think it's Falling Mountain... It does look a bit like Mt Pillinger coming up the valley from Lees Paddocks, but I don't think Pop ever went down that way...
