Port Macquarie to Syd-please suggest some good day walks?

Postby hejjhog » Sat 17 Nov, 2012 6:26 pm

Hi! My partner and I are planning a "road trip" over the Christmas break between Port Macquarie and Sydney. We've got the Daly "Take a walk" book, but I'm keen to hear suggestions on great day walks along the way, especially since the Daly book seems to cover only parks along the coastline, not venturing much into the interior. [I'd be keen to hear non-bushwalking awesome things to do as well]. We've got 16 days to do it all :D... Now to figure out what the "all" is...

So, has anyone done anything really great in the National Parks there, or have hints or tips on campsites to stay at or avoid etc?

Thanks in advance!

We're reasonably fit, and can do 22km (+-200m elevation) as a day walk without too much effort.

Can you suggest some walks in particular? And at Myall lakes - where's the best place to stay (in terms of geography; they are a bit big...)
Thanks!

Wow, no shortage of choice there.
A couple of suggestions you might consider are Perpendicular Point at Laurieton (okay, Dunbogan for the pedantically inclined) and, if you don't mind dirt roads you could continure through Diamond Point.
If you want to do some bird watching, Ash Island is Australia's best place to see some with 187 different species sighted so far. Drop in at the Rangers HQ in the old school house and tell them Ian the bird man sent you and you'll get a free cup of tea and some good conversation. All walks here are flat.
Also at the eastern side of Lake Macquarie is the Green Point walk, lovely, lakeside and a great place for a picnic.
If you include Sydney don't miss the Taronga Park to Balmoral walk, truly beautiful.
Have a good trip whatever you decide.
